Role Overview
Global Citizen is seeking a Policy and advocacy lead for a Full time, 12 month renewable contract position.
The role is remote in Rwanda – this role may be based in Nigeria, Ghana or South Africa and will support Global Citizen’s health advocacy campaigns and related events globally and across Africa to include; Global Citizen Festivals and thought leadership convenings, tentpoles and Move Afrika: a Global Citizen Experience which will take place across key cities in Africa.
Protecting health, education, public infrastructure, and other critical development sectors is critical while concomitantly laying the path toward a new financial system that drives financial resources necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Investing in health must be a critical part of international financing system reforms and also a key component of domestic resource allocation.
The Bridgetown Agenda calls for critical changes to the international financial system, as a means to galvanize the financing necessary to reinvigorate attention to the goal of ending extreme poverty and achieving the SDGs by development partners. The Bridgetown Agenda creates an opportunity to highlight the need to unlock money for financing stronger healthcare systems and augment pandemic prevention and preparedness.
With more and better financing unlocked, there can be stronger investments towards health, particularly sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). By amplifying women’s voices from often unheard corners of the world, allowing them to tell their own life-saving stories around SRHR, particularly across the African continent. Through global policy and advocacy campaigns, Global Citizen aims to bring a human narrative to this issue, and increase the dialogue around restructuring financing for healthcare at large.
Global Citizen will leverage its “pop meets policy” advocacy model to create impact. This role will be responsible for supporting the execution of global and regional campaigns consisting of short term and long term goals. This may consist of digital campaigns, offline activations, thought leadership convenings and mass scale policy and live music events. This role will be responsible for educating local and regional audiences on the importance of health equity and put pressure on key policy decision makers to deliver on policy objectives to include strengthening local systems and capacities.
Key responsibilities: The Health policy & Advocacy lead for Africa will be responsible for:
- Leading, supporting the design, development, and day to day management of a key policy and advocacy grant-funded, multi-year health campaign. This campaign focuses on increasing domestic budgetary allocation for health, unlocking financing for, and making healthcare more equitable and widely accessible in Africa with specific emphasis on SRHR
- Grant management: Develop project plans, allocate resources, and track progress against established goals. Provide day to day oversight on health grant activities and, where appropriate, connect deliverables across GC’s broader grant portfolio for Africa.
- Donor relations: leads stewardship and cultivation of current and prospective health financing, health equity, and adjacent sector donors to scale GC’s health advocacy impact.
- Interface with governments, private sector, NGOs and internal stakeholders to advance advocacy, report back on commitments made as part of Global Citizen advocacy campaigns and tentpole moments i.e impact reporting
- Relationship management: Organize and drive the agenda and preparation for meetings with grant sponsors and other relevant stakeholders. Manage meetings, and handle correspondence with key stakeholders.
- Supporting and advising the VP, Global Policy on managing day-to-day operations and priorities with the grant sponsor.
- Development of policy memos, conducting research and analysis to drive policy formulation and advocacy campaign design
- Ensure effective communication, coordination, and managing workflow across the global policy team, Finance, Comms & marketing, Broadcast and production and growth teams
Additional Responsibilities: Additional responsibilities may include developing briefs and talking points on policy issues aligned with Global Citizen’s broader global advocacy objectives, and overseeing policy projects, ensuring timely delivery of goals.
The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a matrixed organization is key. This role will work closely with the broader Global Policy and Advocacy team, interface with governments and stakeholders, and report on campaign commitments. Expertise in project management, data management, and excellent communication skills will contribute to the impactful work of Global Citizen in defeating poverty, defending the planet, and demanding equity.
Requirements:
- Bachelors/ Masters Degree in public health, human rights, international relations, or related fields. eCO9Ccd B2XmaP
- 3+ years of Knowledge and experience with non-governmental organizations, governments, social impact, international institutions, United Nations agencies, and/ or non-profit organizations required
- Experience with project management
- Experience with data management, monitoring, and evaluation
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to manage projects with professionalism and discretion
- Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in a second AU language is a plus
- Highly proficient in MS Office, Excel, Google Suite, Salesforce
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
