JSPS Opens Applications for FY2027 Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has officially opened applications for its FY2027 Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan, inviting Japanese host institutions to nominate outstanding overseas researchers for long-term and short-term collaborative research opportunities.
The fellowship programme aims to strengthen international academic collaboration by supporting distinguished researchers from around the world to conduct joint research with counterparts at Japanese universities and research institutions.
Applications for the FY2027 funding cycle are now open, with submissions closing at 5:00 p.m. Japan Standard Time (JST) on 28 August 2026.
Fellowship Programme Supports International Research Collaboration
The JSPS Invitational Fellowships are designed to promote international scientific exchange by enabling overseas researchers to undertake collaborative research activities in Japan.
The programme offers two fellowship categories:
- Long-term Invitational Fellowship
- Short-term Invitational Fellowship (First Call)
Successful candidates will work alongside Japanese host researchers at eligible universities and research institutions, contributing to knowledge exchange and the advancement of international research partnerships.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted through Japanese host institutions using the JSPS Electronic Application System. Individual overseas researchers cannot apply directly to JSPS.
The application process requires collaboration between the invited overseas researcher and their Japanese host researcher.
Important application requirements include:
- Applications must be submitted by a Japanese host researcher.
- Host institutions are responsible for forwarding completed applications to JSPS.
- Institutions must obtain internal approval before submission.
- Some host institutions may set internal deadlines that are more than one month earlier than the official JSPS deadline.
Applicants are therefore encouraged to consult their host institution well in advance of the official submission deadline.
Application Deadline
The deadline for FY2027 applications is:
- 28 August 2026
- 5:00 p.m. (Japan Standard Time)
Late applications will not be accepted.
Required Application Documents
JSPS has published the required application forms for both fellowship categories.
Applicants and host researchers will be required to prepare:
- Online application information
- Research Proposal Document
- Fellow’s Curriculum Vitae (CV)
The Research Proposal Document is completed jointly by:
- The Japanese host researcher
- The invited overseas researcher
The Curriculum Vitae must be completed by the invited researcher.
Sample application documents and detailed instructions are also available to assist applicants during the preparation process.
Selection Process
JSPS has released guidance outlining the review and evaluation procedures for the FY2027 competition.
Applicants are encouraged to consult the published:
- Application Guidelines
- Review Section Table
- Review Section Set
- Instructions for Application Forms
- Selection Process documentation
These resources provide information on eligibility requirements, proposal preparation, evaluation criteria, and application procedures.
Role of Japanese Host Institutions
Japanese universities and research institutions play a central role in the application process.
Host institutions are responsible for:
- Verifying application accuracy
- Confirming institutional approval
- Ensuring programme requirements are met
- Submitting completed applications to JSPS
- Coordinating communication with invited researchers
JSPS noted that applications should be checked carefully using the Electronic Application System before final submission.
