The YLabs has announced a new senior leadership opportunity for a Deputy Director, People Operations, inviting experienced human resources and organizational development professionals to help guide the organization’s next phase of international growth.

The full-time remote role is open to global candidates, with preference given to applicants based in Africa. The position sits within YLabs’ Operations & Finance division and focuses on building and strengthening the organization’s global people operations, HR systems, and compliance infrastructure.

Focus on Global HR Strategy and Organizational Growth

Founded at the Harvard Innovation Labs in 2014, YLabs works with young people to co-create digital products and services that improve health, economic opportunity, and climate resilience.

According to YLabs, the Deputy Director role will support:

Key Responsibilities of the Role

The Deputy Director will function as a department head and strategic advisor to YLabs’ senior leadership team.

Core responsibilities include:

Global People Strategy

  • Developing and implementing global pay equity systems
  • Designing salary bands based on regional and national benchmarks
  • Modernizing internal leveling and performance management frameworks
  • Strengthening organizational feedback and growth culture

Talent Acquisition and Recruitment

  • Leading international recruitment strategies
  • Supporting workforce planning across Africa and Asia
  • Building hiring systems for employees and contractors
  • Positioning YLabs as an employer of choice

Policy Development and Compliance

  • Designing policies for globally distributed teams
  • Supporting compliance across multiple countries
  • Advising on employment models such as:
    • Employer of Record arrangements
    • Contractor engagement systems
    • Entity registration strategies

Team Leadership and HR Operations

  • Supervising and mentoring HR and operations staff
  • Managing payroll, benefits, and HR systems
  • Supporting employee wellbeing and engagement initiatives
  • Strengthening internal business operations processes

Qualifications and Experience Required

YLabs is seeking candidates with substantial experience in international people operations and organizational leadership.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in HR, talent management, or people operations
  • Senior leadership experience within international NGOs or global organizations
  • Experience working across African and international contexts
  • Knowledge of international employment compliance and multi-country workforce systems
  • Expertise in compensation structures and pay equity frameworks
  • Experience supervising distributed and multicultural teams

Additional desirable qualifications include:

  • HR-related certifications such as:
    • CIPD
    • SHRM
    • CHRP
  • Experience supporting organizations during growth or transition periods
  • Familiarity with Project Fair pay equity standards
  • Academic background in HR, business, law, or related fields
