Government of Kenya is Hiring for Multiple Expert and Administrative Positions Under Circular and POPs-Free Plastics in Africa Project – Apply by 10 June 2026
The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, State Department for Environment and Climate Change, has announced the recruitment of professionals for several key positions under the Circular and POPs-Free Plastics in Africa (GEFID11049) Project. The initiative is part of a regional effort aimed at reducing the production, importation, and use of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in plastic-containing products while promoting environmentally sustainable waste management practices across Africa.
The project is being implemented in five African countries: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. In Kenya, the project will focus primarily on eliminating POPs in the automotive sector. Funding is provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), while the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the African Region (BCCC-Africa) serves as the executing agency.

The State Department is inviting qualified candidates to apply for the following positions:
- National Gender Expert (1 Position)
- National Policy Expert (1 Position)
- National Communication Expert (1 Position)
- National Industry Expert (1 Position)
- Administrative Assistant (1 Position)
All positions are offered on a one-year renewable contract basis, subject to performance and project needs.
About the Circular and POPs-Free Plastics in Africa Project
The five-year project, running from 2025 to 2030, seeks to reduce the environmental and health impacts associated with hazardous chemicals found in plastics. The initiative focuses on four major components:
- Policy and economic instruments targeting POPs-containing plastics
- Circular economy practices to reduce POPs in problematic plastics
- Environmentally sound management of plastic waste containing POPs
- Knowledge management, capacity building, and communication
The project aims to strengthen policy frameworks, improve waste management systems, engage private sector stakeholders, and build awareness on safer alternatives to hazardous plastics.
National Gender Expert
The National Gender Expert will coordinate gender-related activities and ensure that project implementation aligns with national gender mainstreaming policies and strategies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting gender-focused training activities
- Monitoring gender indicators
- Conducting gender assessments and reviews
- Collecting gender-disaggregated information and data
- Supporting gender integration across project activities
Applicants should possess:
- A postgraduate degree in Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or a related field
- At least five years of experience in gender mainstreaming and analysis
- Experience working with government agencies and international organizations
- Strong communication, leadership, and analytical skills
National Policy Expert
The National Policy Expert will lead policy development and legal reform efforts aimed at eliminating POPs in automotive plastics.
Key duties include:
- Developing national policy strategies
- Drafting regulations and legal frameworks
- Supporting enforcement and compliance systems
- Monitoring policy implementation
- Delivering policy-related capacity-building initiatives
Candidates should have:
- A Master’s degree or PhD in Law, Environmental Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, or related fields
- Between seven and ten years of relevant professional experience
- Expertise in environmental governance and policy development
- Knowledge of international environmental conventions and chemicals management
National Communication Expert
The Communication Expert will drive public awareness, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communications for the project.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing communication strategies and work plans
- Producing content for digital and traditional media platforms
- Creating awareness and educational materials
- Managing stakeholder communication
- Supporting media engagement and partnerships
Requirements include:
- Advanced degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or related disciplines
- Minimum five years of post-qualification experience
- Strong writing, reporting, and media engagement skills
- Experience in environmental project communication
National Industry Expert
The Industry Expert will coordinate private sector engagement and support the implementation of pilot projects designed to eliminate POPs from plastics.
Main responsibilities include:
- Supporting industry mapping and data collection
- Monitoring industry-related project indicators
- Coordinating private sector stakeholders
- Identifying best practices and technologies
- Reviewing training materials and intervention plans
Applicants should possess:
- An advanced degree in Industrial Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, Environmental Engineering, or related fields
- At least five years of relevant professional experience
- Knowledge of plastics, chemicals management, and circular economy approaches
- Strong stakeholder engagement and analytical skills
Administrative Assistant
The Administrative Assistant will provide operational and administrative support to ensure smooth project implementation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing project documentation and records
- Coordinating meetings and communications
- Supporting monitoring and evaluation activities
- Assisting with financial administration and procurement
- Tracking project timelines and budgets
Minimum qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field
- At least one year of relevant experience
- Training in monitoring and evaluation
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
