United Nations Environment Programme is Hiring a Finance and Budget Assistant – Apply by 2 June 2026

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is inviting applications for the position of Finance and Budget Assistant (G6) based in Nairobi, Kenya. About the Position

The Finance and Budget Assistant will work under the guidance of the Finance and Budget Officer and support a wide range of financial and administrative responsibilities linked to UNEP programmes and projects.

The selected candidate will assist with budget preparation, expenditure monitoring, financial reporting, and project financial management. The role also involves maintaining financial databases, preparing budget performance reports, coordinating financial documentation, and supporting decision-making through data analysis and reporting.

This is a full-time position based in Nairobi with an initial appointment period of one year, subject to extension depending on funding availability and organizational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The Finance and Budget Assistant will support several core functions across budget administration and programme finance management.

Budget and Financial Management Duties

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the preparation and review of medium-term plans and budget proposals
  • Assisting managers in developing resource requirements for budget submissions
  • Monitoring expenditures against approved budgets
  • Preparing budget revisions and performance reports
  • Reviewing requisitions for goods and services to ensure compliance and availability of funds
  • Verifying the accuracy and consistency of financial data
  • Maintaining financial databases and budget records
  • Supporting financial reporting and analysis processes

Administrative and Operational Support

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Drafting financial correspondence and responding to enquiries
  • Maintaining updated financial and programme records
  • Supporting data analysis and preparation of presentations and reports
  • Assisting with knowledge management and information-sharing materials
  • Providing guidance and support to junior staff where necessary
  • Performing other related administrative duties assigned by management

Required Qualifications

Applicants interested in the UNEP Finance and Budget Assistant role must meet the following requirements:

Education

  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Additional qualifications or training in finance and budgeting are considered an advantage

Professional Experience

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project budget management
  • Experience using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as Umoja, Inspira, or related platforms
  • Experience in administration and project financial management
  • Experience working within the United Nations system or similar international organizations is desirable
  • At least one year of experience in data analytics or related areas is considered an asset

Applicants holding a first-level university degree may qualify with reduced years of experience.

Skills and Competencies
