Apply for the Swansea University Fully Funded Doctoral Research Scholarship in Sociology and Migration Studies 2026 Academic Year

Swansea University is offering a fully funded doctoral research opportunity for students interested in sociology, migration studies and international education.
The scholarship, titled “Uncertain Pathways: Mapping Chinese International Students’ Post-Study (Im)Mobility in the UK (RS957)”, is part of the university’s Swansea University Research Excellence Scholarships (SURES) programme for the 2026 academic year.
The scholarship provides an opportunity for outstanding UK and international applicants to undertake advanced research examining how Chinese international students navigate post-study migration pathways in the UK amid changing immigration policies, economic uncertainty and evolving social conditions.
Fully Funded PhD Scholarship Opportunity
The SURES scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and includes an annual stipend aligned with the UKRI standard rate, currently valued at £21,805 for the 2026/27 academic year. In addition, successful candidates will receive up to £1,000 per year in research and training support.
This additional funding can be used for conference participation, immersive research experiences, industry engagement and international collaboration opportunities. The scholarship is awarded for a maximum duration of three years, during which students are expected to complete and submit their doctoral thesis.
The project is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with exceptional deferral requests considered only under limited circumstances and subject to university approval.
Research Focus: International Student Mobility and Migration
The research project explores the post-study experiences of Chinese international students in the UK, focusing on how they make decisions about remaining in the UK, returning home or relocating to other countries after graduation.
As the largest international student group in the UK, Chinese students represent a significant area of interest for migration and higher education research. The study investigates how factors such as visa regulations, labour market conditions, transnational networks and personal ambitions influence mobility decisions.
Using a 12-month longitudinal diary method combined with interviews, the research aims to capture both immediate experiences and long-term reflections from graduates. This approach will provide a deeper understanding of how individuals respond to changing migration policies, employment opportunities and broader social environments, including rising xenophobia and anti-immigration discourse.
The project also seeks to contribute to discussions around talent retention, higher education sustainability and the future of international student recruitment in the UK.
Academic Supervision and Study Location
The project will be supervised by academics Mengwei Tu and Daniel Nehring, both associated with the Sociology research programme at Swansea University.
Students will be enrolled in the Sociology PhD programme and study on a full-time basis. Research activities may take place across Swansea University’s Singleton Campus and Bay Campus.
