Zero Waste Europe has announced a new leadership opportunity for an experienced communications professional to join its growing environmental advocacy network as Head of Communications.

The Brussels-based role offers a hybrid working arrangement and provides an opportunity to lead strategic communications for one of Europe’s leading environmental and zero waste organizations.

The position is open to candidates already eligible to work in Belgium and applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis until 29 May 2026.

About Zero Waste Europe

Zero Waste Europe is a European network of communities, local leaders, activists, and experts working toward sustainable resource use and the elimination of waste.

The organization advocates for:

  • Circular economy systems
  • Sustainable resource management
  • Plastic reduction and phase-out
  • Municipal zero waste strategies
  • Environmental justice and policy reform

The network currently includes 41 member organizations and alliances across 30 European countries.

Zero Waste Europe also founded the Mission Zero Academy (MiZA) and serves as the European chapter of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives.


About the Head of Communications Role

The successful candidate will lead the organization’s communications vision, oversee strategic messaging, manage the communications team, and contribute to fundraising and advocacy efforts.

The role combines leadership, storytelling, policy communications, campaign strategy, and external engagement.

Position Details

  • Position: Head of Communications

  • Work Schedule: Full-time (80% option available)

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Leadership

The Head of Communications will:

  • Lead and implement ZWE’s communications strategy
  • Support organizational positioning and advocacy messaging
  • Develop compelling narratives and public campaigns
  • Strengthen communication impact beyond traditional policy audiences

Team Management

The role includes direct management of the Communications Team, currently made up of three Communications Officers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Team coordination and mentoring
  • Supporting professional development
  • Encouraging innovation and collaboration
  • Ensuring strategic alignment across projects

Communications Oversight

The selected candidate will oversee:

  • Campaigns and publications
  • Press releases and media engagement
  • Website and digital communication platforms
  • Public reports and annual publications
  • Communication impact monitoring and audience engagement

External Engagement and Partnerships

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Supporting donor engagement and fundraising communications
  • Representing ZWE in media and public events
  • Supporting Mission Zero Academy communications
  • Acting as the European contact point for GAIA communications initiatives

Required Qualifications and Skills

Applicants should demonstrate strong experience in communications leadership and environmental advocacy.

Educational Background

  • Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in:
    • Communications
    • Public relations
    • Journalism
    • Advocacy communications
    • Campaign management
  • Prior leadership and line management experience is essential

Technical and Strategic Skills

Candidates should possess expertise in:

  • Strategic communications and storytelling
  • Narrative-building and hope-based communications
  • Campaigning and political influence
  • Project management and stakeholder coordination
  • EU-funded project communications

Digital Tools

Familiarity with the following tools is preferred:

  • Google Workspace
  • Slack
  • Zoho
  • Canva
  • Adobe Suite (an advantage)

Language Skills

  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Additional European languages are considered an asset

Salary and Benefits

Zero Waste Europe offers a competitive NGO-sector compensation package in Belgium.

Salary Range

  • €4,941 – €5,355 gross monthly (100% FTE)

Eligibility Requirements

Recruitment Process

The interview process includes:

  1. Online Screening Interview (30 minutes)
  2. Second Interview with leadership team (1.5–2 hours)
  3. Possible short assignment related to previous organizational work
