Through the CACEPS project—implemented in collaboration with the African Union’s African Think Tank Platform APHRC aims to strengthen think tanks and policy institutions in producing high-quality research and shaping policy discourse across the continent.

Role Overview: Communications Officer

The Communications Officer will be based in Nairobi and will work within APHRC’s Policy Engagement and Communications Division. The role focuses on implementing communication strategies, enhancing visibility, and translating complex research into accessible, engaging content for diverse audiences.

This position combines strategic communication, multimedia production, and policy engagement, making it ideal for candidates with strong storytelling and digital communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Content Development and Research Translation

  • Translate technical research into clear, engaging, non-technical content
  • Develop blogs, articles, policy briefs, web content, and social media posts
  • Create infographics, dashboards, and high-level presentation materials
  • Produce short explainer videos and key messaging briefs
  • Ensure consistent storytelling around research impact

Digital Engagement and Communications

  • Manage website updates, newsletters, and social media platforms
  • Optimize content for reach, engagement, and visibility
  • Run digital campaigns aligned with policy priorities
  • Support digital storytelling for diverse audiences

Media Relations and Public Engagement

  • Coordinate media interviews and press briefings
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, and opinion pieces
  • Maintain media contact databases
  • Strengthen relationships with journalists and media outlets

Event Communication and Visibility

  • Support communication for workshops, conferences, and policy dialogues
  • Develop event materials such as banners, programs, and presentations
  • Provide live event coverage through social media and summaries

Knowledge Management and Documentation

  • Develop communication toolkits and standardized messaging
  • Capture and translate technical research into policy-friendly narratives
  • Identify target audiences and appropriate communication channels

Stakeholder and Policy Engagement

  • Support engagement with policymakers, funders, and research communities
  • Contribute to donor reporting and communication outputs
  • Strengthen partnerships and promote project visibility

Reporting and Coordination

  • Prepare reports on communication outputs and impact
  • Coordinate communication efforts across partners and stakeholders

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field
  • At least five years of experience, preferably in multi-country or international projects
  • Proven ability to design and implement communication strategies
  • Excellent writing, storytelling, and content development skills
  • Experience in media relations and stakeholder engagement
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and multimedia production
  • Experience with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign is an added advantage
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or other African Union languages is a plus
