The Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences is inviting applications for a Senior Researcher position within the project Migration and Us: Mobilities, Refugees and Borders from the Perspective of the Human Sciences. This opportunity targets experienced scholars specialising in migration dynamics across Eurasia, with a focus on interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research.
The selected candidate will join a collaborative international research team and is expected to relocate to Prague, contributing to a project addressing one of the most pressing global challenges—migration.
Research Focus and Scope
The role centres on analysing migration flows across Eurasia, particularly examining the drivers and structures influencing movement. The successful applicant is expected to explore both state and non-state factors shaping migration patterns.
Key thematic areas include:
- Environmental, economic, religious, and cultural migration corridors
- State-level frameworks such as:
- Bilateral treaties
- International migration agreements
- National migration laws
- Non-state influences such as:
- Ethnicity
- Religion
- Social and cultural networks
This research contributes to a broader understanding of mobility, borders, and refugee dynamics from a humanities perspective.
Candidate Profile
Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic and research credentials aligned with the project’s thematic focus. Essential requirements include:
- PhD in Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, or a relevant humanities discipline
- Proven expertise in field or textual research using original sources
- Established publication record in relevant academic fields
- Proficiency in English for research and publication purposes
- Knowledge of at least one Asian or Middle Eastern language
While knowledge of Czech is not mandatory, a willingness to integrate into the Czech academic environment is valued.
Employment Conditions
The position offers competitive terms within a supportive academic environment:
- Salary: EUR 2,500–3,000 per month
- Contract duration: 26 months
- Employment type: Full-time
- Start date: From 1 November 2026 or earlier
