The Society for Family Health (SFH), a leading Nigerian non-governmental organisation, is seeking a Strategic Communications Specialist to support its ongoing transformation into a systems-driven and impact-focused organisation. Based in Abuja, Nigeria, this short-term contract role offers a unique opportunity to shape how the organisation communicates its mission, impact, and strategic direction.

SFH works collaboratively with communities, government institutions, donors, and the private sector to advance universal health coverage and social justice across Nigeria. The organisation is now repositioning its external identity and is looking for a communications expert who can bridge strategy, storytelling, and influence.

Role Purpose

The Strategic Communications Specialist will play a central role in translating organisational strategy into compelling narratives and high-impact communication outputs. The position goes beyond traditional communications by focusing on strategic positioning, storytelling, and stakeholder influence.

The successful candidate will lead the development of messaging frameworks, flagship content, and visibility strategies that enhance SFH’s reputation and engagement with key audiences.

Key Deliverables

The role is structured around six core delivery areas:

Strategic Narrative and Messaging

  • Development of a positioning and narrative document
  • Creation of a messaging framework (messaging house) to ensure consistency across communications

Flagship Content and Communication Assets

  • Design and production of a corporate brochure
  • Development of a donor and partner engagement deck
  • Creation of programme factsheets and policy briefs
  • Preparation of an organisational profile or one-pager

Thought Leadership and Digital Presence

  • Development of a LinkedIn-focused social media strategy
  • Creation of a content calendar with high-quality sample outputs
  • Writing of 3–5 thought leadership articles, including blogs and opinion pieces

Website Content Refresh

  • Conducting a content audit of the existing website
  • Providing restructuring recommendations
  • Rewriting key pages such as:
    • About
    • What We Do
    • Impact

Visibility and Stakeholder Influence

  • Development of a 6–12 month visibility and engagement plan
  • Strategic positioning across priority platforms and stakeholder groups

Internal Enablement

  • Creation of a communications toolkit, including templates and guidelines
  • Facilitation of an internal alignment workshop to ensure consistency in messaging

Candidate Profile

The organisation is seeking a professional who can seamlessly connect strategy, narrative, and influence. The ideal candidate is both a strategic thinker and a skilled storyteller with a proven ability to develop impactful communication products.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field
  • A postgraduate qualification in a related discipline is considered an added advantage

Experience

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in:
    • Strategic communications
    • Brand positioning
    • Content strategy
  • Strong portfolio showcasing high-level communication assets
  • Experience working in:
    • Global health
    • International development
    • Public sector environments
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with:
    • Donors
    • Government institutions
    • International organisations
  • Proven capacity to translate complex concepts into clear, compelling, and persuasive messaging

Contract Details

  • Location: Abuja, Nigeria
  • Work Mode: Hybrid (combination of in-office and remote work)
  • Contract Duration: 10–12 weeks (renewable based on performance and organisational needs)
  • Industry: NGO / Social Services
