Role Overview

The Strategic Communications Consultant will play a central role in delivering high-impact communications strategies across the organization. The consultant will work closely with media teams, campaigners, policy experts, and investigators to amplify key findings and drive engagement.

This is a full-time consultancy role (4 days per week) with a minimum duration of two months. The consultant will earn £300 per day, with the work location to be determined, though occasional presence in London may be beneficial.

A key focus of the role is leading communications for the Annual Defenders Report, one of Global Witness’ most influential publications highlighting threats faced by environmental defenders worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible for developing and executing strategic communications initiatives that maximize visibility and impact. Core responsibilities include:

  • Leading communication strategies and messaging for major reports and investigations
  • Identifying opportunities for media coverage across mainstream and specialist outlets
  • Drafting high-quality content, including press releases, statements, op-eds, and social media posts
  • Supporting press engagement and managing media relationships
  • Monitoring and evaluating media coverage and campaign performance
  • Collaborating with internal teams to produce multimedia content such as videos, podcasts, and digital campaigns

The role also involves active participation in weekly communications meetings and supporting the organization’s busy press office.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Global Witness is seeking a proactive and experienced communications professional with a strong track record in media and advocacy.

Essential Requirements

  • Extensive experience in media, press, or communications roles
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives
  • Proven success in delivering impactful media strategies
  • Strong media relations skills and an established network of journalist contacts
  • Fluency in English
  • Experience managing press launches under tight deadlines
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work collaboratively across teams

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of environmental and climate justice issues, particularly in Latin America
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese
  • Experience in high-pressure communications environments
  • Familiarity with global media landscapes
  • Experience working with spokespeople and providing media training
  • Knowledge of media monitoring and evaluation tools
