The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is currently recruiting a Researcher to join its Pretoria-based team and contribute to data-driven policy analysis that supports sustainable development across the continent.

About the African Futures and Innovation Programme
The African Futures and Innovation Programme (AFI) at the Institute for Security Studies focuses on long-term forecasting and scenario analysis to guide policy planning across Africa.
The programme uses the International Futures (IFs) modelling platform, developed by the Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures, alongside global datasets to analyse trends and develop policy-relevant projections.
Through this work, AFI produces research that helps decision-makers address complex issues affecting Africa’s future, including:
- Economic development
- Demographic changes
- Education systems
- Energy and environmental sustainability
- Agricultural productivity
- Governance and conflict prevention
- Health and social development
Findings from the programme contribute to research publications and updates on the AFI website, helping governments and organizations design evidence-based policies.
Researcher Opportunity at ISS Pretoria: Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a central role in conducting research and communicating insights that shape Africa’s development strategies.
Core responsibilities include:
Research and Data Analysis
- Conduct trend and scenario analysis using the International Futures (IFs) modelling platform
- Analyse continental and country-specific development trends
- Develop policy recommendations based on modelling results and data analysis
Research Publications and Communication
- Write research outputs, blogs, and reports for the AFI website
- Communicate research findings through written publications, presentations, and media commentary
- Participate in seminars, expert roundtables, and stakeholder meetings
Programme and Project Support
- Update country, regional, and thematic profiles on the AFI website
- Contribute to ongoing research projects within the programme
- Provide peer review of colleagues’ research work
Stakeholder Engagement
- Network with donors, policymakers, and research partners
- Support ISS in strengthening its profile and influence in policy discussions
- Provide technical support to stakeholders interested in AFI research results
Research Development
- Identify potential funding opportunities for research initiatives
- Prepare concept notes and research proposals
Researcher Opportunity at ISS Pretoria: Required Qualifications and Skills
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
Academic Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in economics, statistics, or a related field
- A PhD is advantageous but not required
Research Skills
- Strong quantitative research and analytical skills
- Experience working with data analysis, modelling tools, or statistical methods
Communication Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Knowledge of French is considered an advantage
Professional Competencies
- Strong interpersonal and networking abilities
- Ability to collaborate in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently under deadlines
- Demonstrated willingness to learn and adapt
Experience in policy research within government institutions, think tanks, or research organizations will be considered an added advantage.
Contract Details
The position is offered on a 24-month fixed-term contract, based in Pretoria.
Key contract conditions include:
- Three-month probation period
