Call for Applications: World Food Programme (WFP) Innovation Challenge (up to USD 100,000 in funding)

The World Food Programme (WFP) Innovation Challenge invites startups, companies, and WFP employees to submit game-changing innovations that deliver humanitarian relief, strengthen resilience, and contribute to the global goal of ending hunger. Selected innovators can receive up to USD 100,000 in equity-free funding, alongside mentorship, operational access, and global partnerships through the world’s largest humanitarian organization.

Why This Challenge Matters

Global hunger remains one of the most urgent challenges of our time. More than 828 million people go to bed hungry each night, while 333 million people face acute food insecurity at record levels. Rising food and fuel costs, climate change, conflict, and economic shocks have significantly increased the cost and complexity of humanitarian assistance.

Against this backdrop, WFP is seeking disruptive social innovations that improve humanitarian response efficiency, enhance supply chain resilience, and ensure that every donor dollar reaches more people—without compromising dignity or effectiveness.

Focus Areas and Innovation Priorities

This edition of the WFP Innovation Challenge is designed to identify solutions that address critical bottlenecks in hunger response and resilience-building. Priority areas include:

  • Preparedness and Prevention
    • Innovations that enhance risk assessment, early warning systems, contingency planning, and proactive crisis response
    • Tools that help safeguard lives and resources before emergencies escalate
  • Effective Relief Assistance
    • Solutions that improve coordination, targeting, and delivery of humanitarian aid
    • Approaches that respect the dignity, rights, and agency of affected communities
  • Supply Chain Resilience
    • Innovations that strengthen supply chains against disruptions
    • Technologies and systems that ensure continuity, efficiency, and adaptability in food delivery

Both low-tech and high-tech solutions are encouraged, including strong “wildcard” innovations that may not fit neatly into one category but demonstrate high potential impact.

Who Can Apply

The challenge is open to two main groups:

Startups and Companies

  • Must be incorporated at the time of application (for-profit or not-for-profit)

  • Applications should clearly explain how collaboration with WFP supports long-term growth

WFP Employees

  • Teams must show Country Office support and management buy-in
  • Open to all contract types and functions
  • Collaborative applications with NGOs, governments, or private sector partners are encouraged

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and submissions that are not selected immediately may be considered for future WFP innovation programmes.
