The ocean is our planet’s lifeline, sustaining ecosystems, livelihoods, and climate stability. Yet it faces unprecedented threats—from climate change and biodiversity loss to pollution and overexploitation. While young leaders across the world are stepping up with innovative solutions, many remain excluded from decision-making spaces and lack access to the resources and networks needed to scale their impact.
The Ocean Leaders Fellowship (OLF) 2026 was created to change this reality.
Developed by the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) in partnership with Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy, the Ocean Leaders Fellowship is a prestigious annual program designed to equip the next generation of ocean and climate leaders with the skills, confidence, and global networks required to influence systems-level change.
About the Fellowship
The Ocean Leaders Fellowship empowers 40 early-career ocean and climate leaders from around the world through an intensive leadership and capacity-building journey.
The program combines virtual learning, peer collaboration, mentorship, and a fully funded international leadership institute, ensuring Fellows can deepen their impact while remaining rooted in their local contexts.
The 2026 Fellowship will run from 26 March to 5 December 2026, blending weekly virtual programming (approximately 5 hours per week) with an immersive 12-day, fully funded international experience from 9–19 June 2026.
Host Country for the Leadership Institute: Kenya 🇰🇪
All costs are covered, including international travel, accommodation, meals, visa expenses, and program materials.
2026 Thematic Focus: Advancing 30×30
The 2026 cohort is centered on advancing the global 30×30 goal—protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. Rather than abstract commitments, Fellows will work on translating global targets into meaningful, equitable, and locally grounded action.
Key focus areas include:
- What ocean protection means in local and regional contexts
- Equity, livelihoods, and Indigenous leadership
- Ocean–climate connections
- Collective leadership and systems transformation
By investing in 40 leaders, the Fellowship creates ripple effects that strengthen ecosystems of action worldwide.
The Fellowship Experience
Fellows are placed in peer leadership pods of 4–5 participants, fostering trust, accountability, and long-term collaboration. Throughout the program, Fellows will engage in dialogue-based learning, coaching sessions, office hours, and real-world leadership practice.
The 2026 Learning Arc
Phase 1: Listening & Storytelling
Fellows gather and elevate community voices on ocean protection through:
- Community and citizen dialogues
- Multi-stakeholder engagement
- Policy brief development
- Media packages and press outreach strategies
Phase 2: Bridge Building
Fellows translate community knowledge into global policy spaces by practicing:
- Strategic networking
- Influencing decision-makers
- High-stakes storytelling
Phase 3: Activating Collective Power
Fellows turn learning into action through:
- Campaign design and leadership
- Coalition and movement building
- Digital campaigning
- Fundraising fundamentals
- Sustaining resilience, joy, and long-term leadership
The Ocean Leaders Fellowship: Who Should Apply?
The Ocean Leaders Fellowship is designed for young professionals who are already contributing to ocean or climate action and want to strengthen their leadership at a global level.
Applicants must:
- Be 18–35 years old as of 20 June 2026
- Work in ocean or climate action, with a strong interest in 30×30
- Align with one of SOA’s five Ocean Impact Areas
- Have C1 English proficiency
- Be available for international travel 9–19 June 2026
- Not have previously attended OOC or UNOC Youth forums
Students, early-career professionals, environmental advocates, policy enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and sustainability innovators are all encouraged to apply.
