2026/2027 Call for Applications: Social Relevance of the Humanities Fellowship Programme

The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS) invites applications for the 2026/2027 cycle of the Social Relevance of the Humanities (RevHum) Fellowship Programme, supported by the Porticus Foundation. This initiative highlights the essential cognitive and critical functions of the humanities, emphasising their potential to illuminate major contemporary issues shaped by technological advancement, digital modernity and shifting socio-cultural dynamics. The programme encourages humanities and social science scholars to revisit their research topics through the lens of contemporary global relevance—ethical, philosophical, social, political or epistemological—while contributing to broad discussions about the human condition.

The fellowship welcomes international scholars ready to engage deeply with interdisciplinary debates that connect classical humanities perspectives to pressing modern challenges.

Fellowship Format

CAS will award in-residence RevHum fellowships for a period of up to five months. These fellowships are open to postdoctoral, non-Bulgarian researchers, including both junior and senior scholars across all disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.

Selected fellows will receive:

  • A monthly stipend of 1000 EUR (subject to 10% income tax) to cover living expenses in Sofia
  • Accommodation in Sofia, including living quarters and dedicated working space
  • Full access to the CAS library, electronic resources and databases
  • Travel, insurance and visa allowance of up to 850 EUR
  • Research travel support of up to 750 EUR
  • Research expenses up to 100 EUR per fellowship month

Fellows are expected to participate actively in CAS’s scholarly life, including seminars, workshops, academic meetings and public lectures. They will also present their research during their stay and submit a final paper in English summarising the results of their work.

Fellowship Duration and Conditions

Candidates may apply for residence during one of the following periods:

  • Winter Semester: 1 October 2026 – 28 February 2027
  • Summer Semester: 1 March 2027 – 31 July 2027

Applicants must justify their chosen duration through a detailed research plan. Throughout their stay, fellows are expected to engage with the CAS community, contribute to academic events, and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the RevHum Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be non-Bulgarian citizens
  • Hold a PhD in the humanities or social sciences
  • Demonstrate international research experience, such as participation in collaborative academic projects, international conferences or publication in peer-reviewed journals

Early-career researchers (up to 8 years after completing their PhD) must arrange for two letters of recommendation, which should be sent directly by referees.

Working Language

As an international scholarly institution, CAS conducts all academic activities in English, including fellow seminars. Applicants must therefore possess strong English communication skills.

Application Process

Applicants must submit the full set of application documents—completed in English—via e-mail to [email protected] with the subject line “RevHum Fellowships.”

Selection Procedure

The international Academic Council of CAS oversees the selection process. Evaluation is based on academic merit, research potential relative to career stage and relevance of the proposed project. Short-listed applicants will be invited for an online interview in late June 2026.

Final decisions will be communicated in July 2026 via e-mail and posted on the CAS website. Members of the Academic Council do not share individual assessment reports with applicants.
