Universities and research institutions in Denmark are invited to apply for funding to conduct research aligned with the themes outlined in the annual Call for Applications. The call is structured within the framework of Denmark’s development cooperation strategies, “A Changing World – Partnerships in Development” and “Africa’s Century”, which guide thematic priorities and eligible countries.
Research projects selected for funding can last up to five years, with a maximum grant of DKK 10 million per project. The application process follows a two-phase structure. Phase 1 involves submitting an initial project concept, and applicants prequalified at this stage will be invited to submit full proposals in Phase 2. Successful projects are anticipated to commence in April 2027.
Promoting Diversity and Equal Opportunities
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes equal opportunities and diversity in all aspects of development research. Researchers from all backgrounds, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender identity, age, or disability, are strongly encouraged to participate. The Ministry aims to ensure that research initiatives are inclusive, equitable, and representative of a broad range of perspectives, thereby enriching the relevance and impact of funded projects.

General Conditions and Governance
Research collaboration projects funded by Danida operate under the General Conditions set out for ongoing grants. Danida, as part of Denmark’s international development cooperation, provides funding to initiatives that strengthen scientific capacity and promote sustainable development outcomes. Projects must adhere to governance and reporting requirements to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU) plays a central advisory role in evaluating and guiding funded projects. The Committee brings together experts from multiple disciplines to provide professional and scientific advice, ensuring that funded research meets high standards of quality and relevance.
Geographical Focus and Partner Countries
Danida prioritizes research that supports sustainable development and equal opportunities in its partner countries. Projects should focus on countries identified as strategic for Denmark’s development cooperation, particularly in Africa and other low-income regions. The Danida Fellowship Centre facilitates collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building to strengthen research institutions and networks in these countries.
The Centre acts as an active broker, fostering capable organizations that can contribute to sustainable development initiatives in Denmark’s partner countries. Research partnerships often involve a combination of Danish institutions and institutions in eligible countries, with additional involvement from regional or international partners as appropriate.
Project Duration, Funding, and Collaboration
Projects may span up to five years with a maximum grant of DKK 10 million. Applicants must demonstrate scientific competence, experience, and a track record relevant to the project’s thematic focus. Collaboration between Danish and partner country institutions is strongly encouraged to ensure knowledge exchange, capacity strengthening, and equitable partnership.
The involvement of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and other emerging scholars is particularly emphasized. Their participation enhances research capacity and contributes to mutual learning between institutions in Denmark and the Global South. Applicants are encouraged to integrate interdisciplinary approaches, ensure gender sensitivity, and consider equity in research partnerships throughout the project lifecycle.
Administration and Contact
The Danida Fellowship Centre is a self-governing institution founded in 1990 under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Its mission is to promote capacity development, knowledge exchange, and research collaboration. The Centre operates from Frederiksberg (hostel) and Holbæk (administration) and employs 31 permanent staff members alongside junior Danish staff.

Strategic Vision
Through its Calls for Applications, Danida aims to support research that advances sustainable development, strengthens institutional capacity, and fosters global collaboration. By prioritizing equity, inclusion, and innovation, the Ministry ensures that research projects address pressing challenges while contributing to long-term capacity building in partner countries.
