Overview
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) invites applications for the position of Programme Management Assistant under the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit within the Disasters and Conflicts Branch. This fully funded international UN Youth Volunteer assignment, sponsored by the Government of the Czech Republic, aims to strengthen UNEP’s mission to advance environmental sustainability and climate resilience through ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) initiatives.

Context and Organizational Setting
Within the Disasters and Conflicts Branch, the DRR Unit promotes Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) to help countries integrate nature-based solutions into disaster management and climate adaptation strategies.
Guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) and other international frameworks, the Unit provides technical expertise to governments, partners, and communities to build resilience, reduce risks, and enhance environmental governance. The Unit also addresses emerging challenges such as sand and dust storms, wildfires, disaster-induced displacement, and Loss and Damage in climate and disaster contexts.
Assignment Purpose
The Programme Management Assistant will support the DRR Unit’s efforts in project coordination, knowledge management, partnership development, and technical assistance delivery. Working under the direct supervision of the Head of the DRR Unit and the Head of the Disasters and Conflicts Branch, the Volunteer will contribute to strengthening UNEP’s work on Eco-DRR and environmental governance for sustainable and resilient development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Support to Governments and the UN System in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
- Assist in providing technical support on Eco-DRR to identified priority regions and contribute to integrating nature-based solutions and improved governance for resilience.
- Support UNEP’s global and regional engagements related to DRR frameworks, including the Sendai Framework and the Rio Conventions.
- Contribute to organizing and coordinating workshops, side events, and consultations, including preparing background materials and reports.
- Assist the DRR Unit in its role as Secretariat to the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), supporting member engagement, outreach, and communication.
- Collaborate with internal UNEP divisions such as the Climate Change Division to strengthen cross-unit coordination on disaster and resilience initiatives.
2. Knowledge and Capacity Development
- Conduct research and analysis on topics related to Eco-DRR, including humanitarian settings, gender aspects, displacement, and nature-based solutions for coastal and urban resilience.
- Support the preparation, review, and dissemination of research reports, policy briefs, and recommendations.
- Document and systematize good practices, case studies, and lessons learned in Eco-DRR implementation.
- Contribute to the development of training materials, knowledge products, and capacity-building resources.
- Draft communication materials, including press releases, newsletters, social media content, and success stories, to enhance visibility of UNEP’s Eco-DRR work.
3. Project Development and Partnership Building
- Assist in the design and formulation of new projects and proposals to expand UNEP’s Eco-DRR portfolio.
- Support implementation, monitoring, and reporting of ongoing projects, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and performance indicators.
- Maintain updated records of partners, collaborators, and stakeholders engaged in DRR activities.
- Facilitate collaboration with UN agencies, governments, academia, and civil society to promote Eco-DRR and environmental governance at regional and global levels.
Volunteer Engagement and Learning
The Volunteer is expected to strengthen understanding of volunteerism, engage in UNV activities, and contribute articles and reflections on volunteer experiences for UNV publications. Volunteers are also encouraged to participate in knowledge-sharing, local volunteer initiatives, and the UNV Buddy Programme for new volunteers.
Eligibility and Requirements
Age Range: 18–29 years (as required by the Czech Republic-funded UN Youth Volunteer program)
Nationality: Only nationals of the Czech Republic are eligible.
Experience: No prior professional experience required; relevant academic or volunteer experience is desirable.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Disaster Risk Reduction, International Development, Public Policy, or a related field relevant to environmental or climate resilience.
Languages: Fluency in English is required.

Volunteer Entitlements

Living Conditions in Kenya
The duty station for this position is Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya and the headquarters of UNEP and UN-Habitat. Nairobi is a modern, cosmopolitan city offering access to healthcare, transportation, education, and communication services. While living conditions are generally comfortable, volunteers are encouraged to remain mindful of local security advisories. Kenya has a diverse population and vibrant cultural environment, with varied topography and a tropical climate.
