About the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide

The Simon-Skjodt Center’s mission is to alert the national conscience, influence policymakers, and promote global action to prevent genocide and atrocity crimes. Through a combination of research, education, and outreach, the Center contributes to global early-warning efforts and evidence-based responses to emerging risks of mass violence.

Internship Overview

  • Position Title: Simon-Skjodt Center (Research) Intern
  • Session Dates: January 26, 2026 – May 15, 2026
  • Compensation: Paid internship — $16.00 per hour
  • Schedule: 20 hours per week
  • Work Location: Fully remote, with the option of hybrid work for those based in Washington, DC

This internship provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to contribute to high-impact research and policy projects while gaining exposure to international efforts to prevent and respond to genocide and other atrocity crimes.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Intern will assist the Center’s staff and fellows in various aspects of program implementation, including research, policy analysis, and educational initiatives. Specific duties include:

  • Supporting projects and activities related to genocide prevention, response, and policy outreach.
  • Assisting research initiatives such as the Early Warning Project and the Lessons Learned in Preventing and Responding to Mass Atrocities.
  • Conducting research on the dynamics of mass atrocities and policy responses in countries at risk.
  • Monitoring and summarizing news developments related to ongoing or potential atrocities.
  • Performing literature reviews and synthesizing scholarly work on genocide prevention.
  • Preparing detailed notes from interviews and stakeholder meetings.
  • Analyzing fatality data and qualitative reports to assess risk trends using tools such as Excel.
  • Drafting analytical blog posts, research summaries, and rapporteur reports.

This position provides practical experience in research design, data analysis, and writing for both academic and policy audiences.

Eligibility and Key Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • Must be 18 years or older and currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution.
  • Must have completed at least the first semester of their freshman year by the time of application.
  • Must reside in the United States for the full duration of the internship and be able to pass a background check conducted while physically present in the U.S.
  • Must provide proof of legal authorization to work in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated academic or professional interest in genocide and mass atrocity prevention.
  • Experience in research and analytical writing, ideally focused on contemporary conflicts or atrocity prevention.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills, with close attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in researching or monitoring countries currently experiencing or at risk of mass atrocities (e.g., South Sudan, Syria, Myanmar, China, or Ethiopia).
  • Familiarity with social science research methods, as shown through coursework or experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret both qualitative and quantitative data.

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit a combined resume and cover letter (in one Word or PDF file) titled with their first and last name. The cover letter must explicitly address both the minimum and preferred qualifications, using examples from academic or professional experiences.

After the initial screening, selected candidates may be asked to provide a 5–7-page writing sample demonstrating research ability on relevant topics.

Interviews for the Spring 2026 program will begin in November 2025, with final decisions communicated by December 12, 2025. Applications missing either a resume or a cover letter will not be considered.
