About SOAS University of London

SOAS University of London stands as Europe’s leading higher education institution dedicated to the study of Asia, Africa, and the Near and Middle East. Renowned for its focus on global challenges, SOAS is reimagining higher education through international partnerships and an ambitious strategic plan that emphasises both research intensity and student responsiveness.

The university’s commitment to global engagement positions it as a vital academic space for addressing pressing transnational issues — from economic inequality and environmental change to social justice and sustainable development.

About the Role

The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will contribute to the Critical Research on Industrial Livestock Systems (CRILS) Network, a pioneering initiative that connects academics and practitioners — including civil society actors, NGOs, activists, journalists, artists, and policymakers — to examine and critique the global drivers and consequences of industrial animal agriculture.

The fellow will play a key role in coordinating network activities, advancing interdisciplinary research, and developing collaborations that strengthen CRILS’s global impact. The position also provides an opportunity for the fellow to pursue their own research in alignment with the CRILS agenda, particularly in areas related to:

  • Corporate concentration and financialisation in livestock production
  • Labour and value chains in industrial animal agriculture
  • Political economy and ecology of livestock expansion in Global South contexts

Key Responsibilities

Over a two-year period, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will:

  • Lead and coordinate workshops:
    • Organise two major in-person workshops (Spring 2026 and Spring 2027).
    • Support collaborators in delivering annual online workshops
  • Manage Working Groups:
    • Oversee and participate in two thematic Working Groups (WGs) under the guidance of expert leads.
    • Support the submission of WG research outputs to peer-reviewed journals and other dissemination platforms.
  • Research and Networking:
    • Conduct research into prominent academics and practitioners engaged in critical studies of industrial livestock systems.
    • Build partnerships that strengthen CRILS’s global presence and knowledge exchange.
  • Communications and Outreach:
    • Manage all CRILS communications, including written, online, and in-person engagement, as well as the CRILS website.
    • Represent the CRILS Network at relevant conferences, events, and workshops.
  • Funding and Sustainability:
    • Identify and apply for grants to sustain and expand CRILS’s research and outreach activities.

About the Department

The fellow will be based in the Department of Economics at SOAS, working under the supervision of Dr Mehroosh Tak. They will also engage with SOAS’s wider expertise in agrarian change, food systems, and political economy, benefiting from an interdisciplinary academic environment dedicated to critical inquiry and social relevance.
