The Max Planck Institutes for Informatics (Saarbrücken), Software Systems (Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern), and Security and Privacy (Bochum) jointly offer fully funded research internships in all areas of computer science. These internships provide exceptional students and early-career professionals with the opportunity to engage in world-class research within an internationally renowned scientific community.
Overview
The internship program welcomes Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral students from around the world, as well as outstanding individuals from industry who wish to gain academic research experience. Interns work under the guidance of distinguished faculty members at one of the participating institutes, contributing to innovative projects that push the boundaries of computer science.
Internships are highly competitive, with limited positions available each year. Most participants join during the summer months (May–August), although placements are possible throughout the year. Internships typically last 12 to 14 weeks, but longer durations can be arranged depending on the project and mutual agreement between the intern and their mentor.
All internships are fully funded, covering living expenses, accommodation, and round-trip travel costs to and from Germany.
Application Deadlines
- Summer Internships (May–August): Apply by November 1 of the previous year.
- Other Periods: Apply at least five months before the intended start date.
Applicants are notified of their results via email. Successful candidates for the summer intake are typically informed by March 1.
All applications must be submitted online at: https://apply.cis.mpg.de/register/internship.
Why Apply to the Max Planck Internship Program?
The Max Planck Society is one of the world’s leading research networks, known for its excellence in basic and applied sciences. Interning at one of its computer science institutes allows participants to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge research while collaborating with globally recognized scientists.
Key benefits include:
- Direct mentorship from faculty and senior researchers.
- Opportunities to contribute to publications presented at top-tier international conferences.
- A multicultural, English-speaking research environment.
- Comprehensive financial support covering living, housing, and travel expenses.
Many interns use this experience to launch successful research careers or to strengthen their applications for graduate studies and doctoral programs worldwide.
Eligibility
The program is open to:
- Bachelor’s students who have completed at least three years of a computer science degree.
- Master’s students and doctoral candidates in computer science or related disciplines.
- Industry professionals seeking academic research experience.
- Students planning to undertake Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis research may align their thesis work with their internship project if permitted by their home institution.
Candidates should possess a strong academic record and a foundational understanding of computer science, mathematics, and analytical problem-solving. Interdisciplinary applicants — such as those combining computer science with social sciences, law, economics, or humanities — are also encouraged to apply. The program particularly welcomes applications from individuals underrepresented in STEM.
Application Process
- Online Submission:
Candidates must complete the online application form at apply.cis.mpg.de/register/internship. Required materials include:- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Academic transcripts
- Contact details for at least one reference
- Optional motivation letter and preferred research areas or mentors
- Review and Matching:
Applications are reviewed by research groups across the participating institutes. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview. Matching is based on research interests, academic background, and available projects. - Notification:
Selected candidates are informed via email and introduced to their faculty mentor to finalize internship details and project scope.
Research Areas and Institutes
Interns can participate in research spanning the entire field of computer science, including but not limited to:
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Algorithms and Data Structures
- Security, Privacy, and Cryptography
- Software Systems and Formal Methods
- Computer Graphics and Vision
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Networks, Databases, and Distributed Systems
Funding and Support
Every intern receives a monthly stipend sufficient to cover living costs in Germany. The program also covers housing arrangements and reimburses round-trip airfare from the intern’s country of residence.
For international interns, the program provides necessary documentation for visa applications. While visa fees are generally waived for internships under three months, limited reimbursement may be available if fees apply.
Selection Criteria
Selection is strictly merit-based, taking into account academic excellence, research potential, and relevant experience. Candidates do not need prior research experience to apply — many interns undertake their first research projects at Max Planck Institutes. Each application is evaluated holistically, with interviews conducted when necessary to assess fit and motivation.
Additional Information
The program accepts applications year-round, with remote participation possible in exceptional circumstances. Internships are customized to align with the interests and academic development of each intern.
For students and professionals eager to explore groundbreaking computer science research within a vibrant, international community, the Max Planck Internship Program offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn, innovate, and contribute to scientific discovery.
