Helen Keller International Seeks 6 Qualitative Enumerators for Nutrition Study in Samburu County, Kenya – Apply by 11 October 2025

Helen Keller International is currently inviting applications from qualified individuals for six Qualitative Enumerator positions to support a short-term formative research study focused on improving nutrition practices among caregivers of children aged 6–23 months in Samburu East Sub-County, Samburu County.

This research will guide the development of food-based recommendations and behavior change strategies through participatory research methods, contributing directly to efforts aimed at reducing malnutrition and strengthening community-led health practices.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with a background in nutrition, sociology, anthropology, or related fields to gain hands-on experience with applied qualitative research methods in a real-world setting. Ideal for individuals based in Samburu County or those with strong ties to the local communities, this role combines fieldwork, community engagement, and collaborative learning.

Position Overview

Position Title: Enumerators (6) – Qualitative
Location: Samburu East Sub-County, Samburu County
Engagement Duration: Up to 15 days

  • Training: 10–14 November 2025
  • First Round of Data Collection: 17–21 November 2025
  • Second Round of Data Collection: End of January 2026 (Dates to be confirmed)
    Deadline to Apply: 11 October 2025

Enumerators will report to study supervisors and designated team leaders from the Ministry of Health (MOH), depending on their assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

Enumerators will play a critical role in gathering high-quality qualitative data and facilitating inclusive community participation throughout the study. Their responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in comprehensive training sessions on qualitative research tools and methods, including focus group discussions (FGDs), pile sorting, seasonal calendars, and participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools.
  • Facilitating and documenting FGDs with various participant groups such as mothers, fathers, and grandmothers.
  • Conducting household visits to engage with caregivers and learn about feasible, culturally relevant complementary feeding solutions.
  • Translating and transcribing interviews from Samburu and Kiswahili into English, ensuring accuracy and context.
  • Supporting qualitative coding and analysis using structured frameworks.
  • Maintaining detailed field notes and ensuring high-quality audio recordings.
  • Ensuring adherence to ethical research practices, including respectful handling of sensitive information and participant confidentiality.
  • Collaborating effectively with transcription supervisors and research leads.
  • Performing any additional duties as assigned by supervisors or team leads.

Candidate Qualifications and Skills

Helen Keller International is seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Minimum Diploma in Nutrition, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related social science or public health discipline.
  • Experience in conducting in-depth interviews (IDIs), focus group discussions (FGDs), or key informant interviews (KIIs) in community settings.
  • Familiarity with qualitative coding techniques (thematic, inductive, or deductive) and ability to follow structured frameworks.
  • Strong ability to work methodically, follow data collection protocols, and uphold high standards of data integrity.
  • Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and the Samburu dialect, with excellent communication and cultural translation skills.
  • Capable of translating nuanced discussions in a way that respects local customs and accurately conveys meaning.
  • Experience with transcription tools or software is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge or exposure to qualitative analysis platforms such as NVivo, Atlas.ti, or Dedoose is desirable.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity, respect for community norms, and openness to learning from local perspectives.
  • Prior experience in maternal and child health, nutrition, or community-based research is a plus.
  • Must be fully available during the training and both phases of data collection.
  • Preference will be given to applicants residing in Samburu County or those familiar with the local context.
