Fellowship Overview
The Hans de Wit Fellowship, launched in 2022 with support from World Education Services, aims to promote academic mobility for early career researchers in the field of higher education studies.
Hosted by the Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College, the fellowship offers a three-month fully supported research stay in Boston, along with year-long affiliation with CIHE.
Key Fellowship Details
- Affiliation Period: One full academic year (September–August)
- Campus Residency: 3-month visit to Boston during the academic year (September–June)
- Stipend: $3,500/month for 3 months to cover housing and health insurance
- Travel Support: Reimbursement for round-trip economy airfare and visa processing fees
- Resources Provided:
- Desk space and printing privileges
- Computer access (if needed)
- Full access to Boston College libraries (online and in-person)
Expectations of Fellows
While in residence and throughout the year-long affiliation, Fellows are expected to:
- Conduct and present their independent research
- Engage with the CIHE and Boston College academic communities
- Contribute through:
- CIHE’s seminar series
- Guest lectures in the MA program
- Submissions to CIHE publications
Eligibility Criteria
- Early career researchers in higher education studies (within 5 years of earning a doctorate)
- Preference given to:
- Researchers from marginalized backgrounds
- Scholars with refugee status
- Applicants based in the Global South
- Individuals from underrepresented communities in higher education research

Selection Process
- Finalists will be contacted in April for interviews with CIHE leadership.
- One Fellow will be selected per academic year.
- Selected Fellow must travel to Boston between September and June of the award year.
