Role Overview
The Senior Resource Geologist will coordinate and review the estimation of mineral resource models. This involves interpreting geological data, defining mineral controls, estimating grades, and validating block models across operations, development, and exploration projects. In addition, the position requires monitoring of analytical quality control programs, contributing to regulatory technical reports such as NI 43-101 and SEC SK-1300, and supporting drilling programs designed to convert resources and expand reserves.
As a key contributor to the Technical Services team, the successful candidate will also participate in due diligence studies, project evaluations, and mine acquisition assessments. The role demands a balance of technical expertise, leadership in quality assurance, and collaborative engagement with both internal teams and external auditors.
Reporting Structure
The Senior Resource Geologist will report directly to the Chief Geologist.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, compile, and validate geological datasets for use in mineral resource estimation, including mapping, sampling, assaying, petrography, metallurgy, and reconciliation data.
- Develop and deliver geologic models and block model estimates, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices in validation and reporting.
- Provide oversight and guidance for assaying quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programs.
- Support quarterly reconciliation reviews for operating mines and assess the predictive performance of resource models.
- Regularly evaluate and improve estimation workflows for operational and development projects.
- Contribute to annual resource and reserve reporting and support the preparation of Technical Reports (NI 43-101 and SK-1300) in collaboration with external Qualified Person (QP) auditors.
- Assist in the development of Mineral Reserve models for ongoing projects and provide technical expertise for project and company evaluations within the Corporate Development group.
- Engage in due diligence reporting and contribute to acquisition evaluations where required.
Candidate Profile and Qualifications
Hecla Mining Company seeks a geologist with deep expertise in mineral resource estimation and proven experience in technical reporting. The ideal candidate should possess:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline; an advanced degree will be considered advantageous.
- At least ten years of professional experience as a geologist in operating mines, including a minimum of five years specializing in geological and geostatistical modeling.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Leapfrog Geo and EDGE is essential, with additional experience using platforms such as Surpac, Vulcan, or GEMS considered highly valuable.
- Direct exposure to modeling and mining in narrow-vein deposits is preferred. Expertise across multiple deposit types—including volcanogenic massive sulfide, Archean greenstone-hosted (orogenic) gold, low- and high-sulfidation epithermal deposits, and mesothermal silver-base metal veins—is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Active membership in a Self-Regulating Organization (SRO) and certification as a Qualified Person is preferred.
- Availability for domestic and international travel as required, sometimes for extended durations.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, coupled with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in team environments.
- A proven ability to foster professional relationships, negotiate effectively, and engage with stakeholders, vendors, and colleagues in a respectful and constructive manner.
