2026 Tinker Foundation Institutional Grant Cycle – Opportunities for Latin America

The Tinker Foundation has announced its 2026 Institutional Grants program, offering funding for organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people in Latin America. With a strong emphasis on supporting institutions located in the region, the Foundation prioritizes projects that have the potential to generate large-scale impact through research, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives.

Grant Focus Areas

The 2026 grant cycle will prioritize two program areas that the Tinker Foundation has identified as critical for the region:

  1. Democratic Governance – Initiatives that strengthen democratic institutions, promote citizen engagement, enhance transparency, and support inclusive decision-making processes.
  2. Education – Projects that improve access, quality, and equity in education, as well as those that develop innovative strategies for knowledge sharing, learning outcomes, and capacity-building across communities.

The Foundation supports a wide range of activities within these areas, including applied research, advocacy, pilot programs, scaling of promising interventions, and knowledge exchange. Projects may also involve community engagement, workshops, conferences, and measurement and evaluation activities. Collaborative efforts among organizations in Latin America are encouraged, especially those that engage multiple stakeholders affected by the challenges being addressed.

It is important to note that the Tinker Foundation, as a private grantmaker, does not fund certain activities, including direct or grassroots lobbying, annual fund-raising appeals, scholarships, school tuition, major construction, production costs for media, art collections, or endowments. Applicants are encouraged to review the Foundation’s guidelines on lobbying and advocacy to ensure compliance.

Eligibility Criteria

Organizations seeking funding must meet several key eligibility requirements:

  • Organizational Status: The applicant must be a charitable organization with a United States 501(c)(3) status or its equivalent if based outside the U.S. Latin American organizations do not need U.S. 501(c)(3) status. Eligible organizations must have operated with an annual budget of at least $50,000 in 2023, 2024, or 2025.
  • Geographic Focus: Projects must focus on Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
  • Program Alignment: Projects must fall within one of the Foundation’s two priority areas: Democratic Governance or Education.
  • Restrictions: Funding cannot be used for individuals, direct lobbying, annual appeals, scholarships, construction, major equipment, media production, museum collections, films, exhibits, or endowments.

Grant Process and Timeline

The Tinker Foundation’s 2026 Institutional Grant Cycle follows a three-step process:

  1. Eligibility Quiz: Applicants complete an initial quiz to confirm their organization meets the Foundation’s basic requirements.
  2. Letter of Inquiry (LOI): Eligible organizations submit a brief LOI describing the proposed project and an estimated budget. This is the Foundation’s primary method for reviewing applications before inviting full proposals.
    • LOI Open Date: January 7, 2026
    • LOI Close Date: January 21, 2026, 11:59 PM ET
  3. Full Proposal Submission: Only organizations invited after the LOI stage may submit a full proposal. Full proposals must adhere closely to guidelines provided by the Foundation.
    • Submission Deadline: March 19, 2026, 11:59 PM ET
    • Final Decisions Announced: June 2026

Applicants can access the LOI and proposal forms through the Tinker Foundation Online Grants Portal. Organizations with an individual login can submit directly without completing the eligibility quiz again.
