As digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) continue to revolutionize healthcare systems worldwide, there is a growing need for research and innovation to ensure that these technologies effectively improve access, quality, and equity in care. Recognizing the need for fresh perspectives and rigorous inquiry, the Center for Global Digital Health Innovation is launching its Fellowship in Digital Health and AI for Health. This structured mentorship program aims to equip students with the tools to critically engage with the emerging field of digital health and AI, while contributing to important global research initiatives.
The fellowship will empower BSPH students to explore and address the gaps in digital health and AI research, fostering the next generation of leaders who can tackle challenges related to these transformative technologies.
About The Fellowship
The Fellowship in Digital Health and AI for Health offers an exciting opportunity for students passionate about digital health. Fellows will engage in hands-on research, working closely with faculty mentors over an eight-month period. Throughout the program, fellows will contribute to ongoing research projects, either by conducting evidence synthesis on specific digital health or AI topics or by engaging in primary research with a defined output.
By participating in this fellowship, students will gain practical experience while helping to build the global evidence base for digital health and AI solutions. The fellowship aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and applied research, allowing students to generate tangible deliverables that can be used toward their practicum or capstone requirements.
Fellowship Structure and Support
- Number of Fellowships: 14
- Funded Fellowships: Depending on the project and number of applications, funding of up to $1,000 per student may be available.
- Mentorship: Each fellow will be paired with a faculty mentor whose expertise aligns with the selected research topic.
- Duration: Approximately 8 months.
Expected Outputs
Fellows will generate a defined research product that may include one of the following:
- Systematic or Scoping Review: A comprehensive review of existing literature on a selected topic.
- Policy or Evidence Brief: A policy-oriented document summarizing research findings.
- Research Report: A detailed report based on primary data collection.
- Other Deliverables: As determined in collaboration with faculty mentors.
These outputs will serve as valuable contributions to the global digital health field and may also be used for academic requirements such as practicum or capstone projects.

- AI-based Tools for Automating Data Analyses: This project, in collaboration with Vital Strategies, focuses on automating health data analyses such as mortality rates, early warning systems, and error detection across countries including Kenya, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Supervisors: Madhu Jalan, Katya Saksena - Chatbots for Infoveillance: Investigate how chatbots can monitor health-related misinformation, disinformation, and emerging public health threats.
Supervisors: Rose Weeks, Smisha Agarwal - Developing a Research Agenda for Mobile Phone Surveys for RMNCAH&N: Help develop a research agenda and review literature for mobile phone surveys related to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition.
Supervisor: Melinda Munos - Evaluating an AI-assisted Ambient Scribing Care Delivery Model: Evaluate the usability and scalability of AI-powered scribing tools that assist healthcare workers, especially in low-resource settings.
Supervisors: Smisha Agarwal, Suruchi Gupta - AI-Enabled Approaches to Improve Survey Data Quality: Explore how AI and feedback loops can enhance data quality in global health surveys. Fellows will analyze data from health facility assessments and develop best practices.
Supervisor: Shivam Gupta - Literature Review on Digital Health and AI in Humanitarian Emergencies: Conduct a literature review on the use of digital health and AI tools during humanitarian emergencies, with a focus on their impact in crisis situations.
Supervisors: William Weiss, Aral Surmeli - Project TRACE: Developing a Data Pipeline to Detect Structural Health Inequities: Work on a project that combines national health data with local datasets to identify health inequities, using spatial analysis and clustering methods.
Supervisor: Adler Archer - Evaluating the Cost-Effectiveness of Vector-Cam: Assess the economic impact of Vector-Cam, an AI-enabled vector surveillance tool, as it expands to new countries.
