Program Overview

The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP) offers an esteemed opportunity for South African university faculty and research professionals to conduct advanced research at U.S. academic or research institutions. The program supports a research tenure of three to nine months, aimed at fostering scholarly excellence and enhancing academic programs or curricula at the scholar’s home institution in South Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered:

• Hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree by the application deadline.
• Possess a minimum of three years of university-level teaching experience.
• Demonstrate a strong record of scholarly research and publication.
• Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with at least five years of residency. Notably, South African nationals holding dual U.S./South African citizenship are ineligible.
• Proposals must exclude clinical medical research involving patient contact.
• The program does not support doctoral dissertation research, immediate post-doctoral research, or general professional travel.
• Preference is given to candidates without prior Fulbright Scholar grants or with limited U.S. research experience.
• Applicants must have proficient English language skills, sufficient to execute research and collaborate effectively. While TOEFL tests are not required, the U.S. Embassy reserves the right to administer language proficiency assessments.
• Candidates must be in good health; successful applicants will submit medical documentation as part of the award process.

Application Components and Process

The application process is managed through an online portal. Prospective candidates must prepare and submit:

• A comprehensive research proposal with a clearly articulated methodology, comprehensible to a general review panel.
• Three confidential letters of reference submitted directly by referees via the application system. The program does not accept references by email or post.
• A Letter of Invitation from a U.S. host institution is strongly recommended but not mandatory.

Applicants are advised against requesting affiliation with their alma mater. The Fulbright Program endeavors to honor institutional preferences while maintaining flexibility. Candidates unfamiliar with U.S. institutions may request assistance from the Fulbright Program to identify a suitable host.

Laboratory fees are generally not included in the grant package but may be considered on a limited, case-by-case basis if funding permits.
