About the Environment and Society Centre

The Environment and Society Centre (ESC) is a dynamic research hub within Chatham House, dedicated to providing governments, businesses, and civil society with insights, networks, and policy tools to address pressing environmental challenges. The Centre conducts high-impact, independent research and contributes to international processes, often acting as a convening force for diverse perspectives and stakeholders. Its overarching goal is to accelerate progress toward a sustainable future.

The Role

The Programme Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery, strategy, and operations of the Centre’s activities. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of projects focused on sustainable resource use, including oversight of the Fair Water Footprints project. This initiative aims to transform global water use across supply chains, influencing practice and policy in both public and private sectors.

The role also includes managing the Signatory Support Unit, ensuring tailored engagement and communication with partners from government, industry, and civil society.

Key Responsibilities

Programme and Project Delivery

  • Oversee the implementation of complex, high-value projects to ensure deliverables are met within defined timelines and impact objectives.
  • Manage Centre activities, including events and convening sessions, ensuring professional execution and measurable outcomes.
  • Monitor project budgets, maintain accurate financial records, and contribute to effective financial reporting to donors.
  • Assist in grant applications and funding proposals to sustain and grow project portfolios.
  • Ensure audit compliance and sound financial governance.

Stakeholder Engagement and People Management

  • Cultivate strong working relationships with internal teams, funders, external partners, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage outreach and engagement strategies to enhance programme influence.
  • Maintain and expand networks with relevant individuals, organisations, and institutions globally.
  • Line manage team members, providing mentorship and support for professional development.
  • Act as a deputy to the Head of Research Operations when required.

Strategic Development

  • Support implementation of the ESC strategy in alignment with Chatham House’s broader institutional goals.
  • Work closely with the Head of Research Operations, Research Director, and Centre Leads to develop new projects and identify funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other Programme and Centre Managers to enhance internal coordination and operational resilience.
  • Lead or contribute to the review and improvement of programme practices and systems.
  • Assist in enhancing the Centre’s profile, including contributions to media engagement and public visibility.
  • Promote and actively contribute to the organisation’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience managing complex programmes or projects with multiple stakeholders and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated interest or background in environmental issues, including sustainable resource use, climate change, or energy transitions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including funders and partners.
  • Sound financial acumen, with experience managing budgets, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
  • Track record in implementing systems and processes to ensure effective delivery across project portfolios.

Desirable

  • Experience or understanding of sustainable water use and related policy areas.
  • Previous involvement in proposal development and fundraising.
  • Prior line management experience or the desire to develop in this area.

Location and Work Environment

The position is based at Chatham House in St James’s Square, London. The organisation follows a hybrid working model, with employees typically expected on-site two days per week.
