The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, is a prestigious initiative designed to attract the most talented and promising students from around the globe. It offers an exceptional opportunity for high-achieving individuals to pursue their doctoral studies at top universities in Hong Kong—an international hub for education, innovation, and research excellence.
Background and Objective
HKPFS was introduced with a clear goal: to bring together the brightest minds from all corners of the world and provide them with the resources, mentorship, and platform to undertake cutting-edge research in one of Asia’s most vibrant academic ecosystems. Since its inception, the scheme has gained global recognition for its rigorous selection process, competitive funding, and academic excellence.

A total of 400 Fellowships will be awarded for the 2026/27 academic year. For those whose doctoral studies extend beyond three years, the host universities may offer additional support. Prospective applicants are encouraged to consult directly with the universities for specific funding details beyond the three-year period.
It is important to note that the academic year in most Hong Kong universities commences in September.

- Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Technology
- Humanities, Social Sciences and Business Studies
The panels comprise distinguished academics and professionals with expertise in the relevant disciplines. Each application is meticulously evaluated through a multi-dimensional lens, ensuring that only the most outstanding candidates are awarded the Fellowship.
Selection Criteria
While academic excellence remains the core criterion, the Selection Panels adopt a holistic approach to assessment. The following elements are taken into consideration:
- Academic Performance: The applicant’s academic record, including GPA, relevant coursework, awards, and publications.
- Research Ability and Potential: Evidence of past research experiences, publications, project work, or proposals that showcase innovation and a strong aptitude for academic inquiry.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to articulate ideas clearly and collaborate effectively in multicultural and interdisciplinary environments.
