Position Overview
The Humanitarian Access and Safety (HAS) Intern will play a key supporting role in implementing the Global HAS Management System at the Kenya Country Office (CO). Working under the supervision of the Head of Support and the East and South Africa Regional Office (ESARO) HAS Advisor, the intern will contribute to safety, access, and risk management operations, helping NRC maintain secure and effective humanitarian operations in complex environments.
This position is an opportunity for a motivated candidate to develop their understanding of humanitarian safety, access protocols, risk management, and security coordination within an international NGO setting.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will assist in the following core functions:
- Policy and Documentation Support:
Support the implementation and maintenance of HAS plans and procedures. Assist in preparing, reviewing, and updating risk assessments and safety plans. Ensure proper documentation and digital filing of these materials. - Premises and Logistics Assessments:
Contribute to site assessments for NRC rental premises. Support vehicle and movement tracking, ensuring safety equipment in vehicles is properly maintained and procedures are followed. - Training Coordination:
Assist in updating HAS training trackers and support the preparation and facilitation of safety-related training sessions including HEIST (Hostile Environment Individual Security Training), field first aid, and fire safety. - Field Engagement and Contextual Awareness:
Accompany field missions to gain contextual knowledge and help build local access networks. Collect relevant information to support access assessments and stakeholder mapping. - System and Tools Administration:
Assist with user onboarding and training for NRC’s travel authorization request system. Support updates of the emergency communication tree. - Information Management and Analysis:
Support the collection and analysis of humanitarian and security information from public sources to strengthen NRC’s contextual awareness and risk monitoring. - Reporting and Briefings:
Collaborate on developing briefings and debriefings for CO staff and visitors. Support the preparation of periodic HAS reports and action plans. - Support to Regional HAS Team:
Provide general support to the ESARO HAS team in areas such as Security Risk Assessments (SRAs), access strategy development, and delivery of technical guidance. - Safeguarding and Ethical Conduct:
Promote safeguarding principles and ensure alignment with NRC’s zero-tolerance policy on exploitation, abuse, and SEAH (Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment). - Other Duties:
Perform other tasks as delegated by line or technical managers in support of HAS and operational priorities.
Candidate Profile
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. International Relations, Political Science, Security Studies, Environmental Science, or related).
- Basic understanding of humanitarian access, risk management, and NGO security protocols.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Working proficiency in English (written and verbal).
Desirable Experience
- Previous internship or experience in humanitarian or development organisations, particularly in complex operating environments.
- Familiarity with security risk assessments or field operations coordination is a plus.
