Tearfund is currently recruiting a Global Economic Empowerment Specialist (Livelihoods & Environment) to lead strategic efforts in sustainable development, with a focus on equipping vulnerable communities to achieve long-term economic resilience. This critical role will provide strategic leadership, technical direction, and innovative insight into Tearfund’s global economic empowerment work, ensuring that all programming is high-quality, contextually relevant, and deeply impactful.

The successful candidate will play a key role in transforming the livelihoods of communities through integrated development strategies that intersect economics, environment, and faith-based mobilization.

Key Responsibilities

The Global Economic Empowerment Specialist will serve as a subject matter expert within Tearfund’s International Group, with the following primary areas of responsibility:

1. Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment Programming

  • Design, guide, and support sustainable economic initiatives across various country programs.
  • Lead on the development and expansion of key approaches such as savings groups, green job creation, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and business development tailored to local contexts.
  • Ensure programs are integrated with Tearfund’s church and community mobilization model to strengthen long-term community-led transformation.

2. Strategic Leadership & Technical Support

  • Provide high-level technical direction and advisory support to Tearfund staff and implementing partners.
  • Drive program quality by ensuring all economic empowerment initiatives align with best practices, global standards, and Tearfund’s mission.
  • Collaborate with national and regional teams to co-create scalable models and locally driven solutions to address poverty and environmental challenges.

3. Research, Policy, and Knowledge Mobilization

  • Act as the focal point for knowledge sharing, learning, and innovation in economic empowerment and environmental resilience.
  • Lead research and analysis on global and regional economic trends, policies, and practices to inform adaptive programming.
  • Synthesize learning and insights into actionable recommendations and tools for practitioners.

4. Collaboration and Thought Leadership

  • Work closely with Tearfund’s Technical Advisory Group, contributing thought leadership on economic and environmental resilience.
  • Facilitate learning exchanges and develop partnerships with external networks, research bodies, and local organizations.
  • Represent Tearfund in regional and global forums focused on sustainable development, livelihoods, and environmental justice.

Candidate Profile

Tearfund seeks a dynamic and highly skilled development professional with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Extensive experience working with national partner organizations, civil society, or local governments in both long-term development and post-crisis recovery contexts.
  • Proven technical expertise in at least two of the following areas: sustainable livelihoods, environmental programming, savings groups, green job creation, entrepreneurship, or financial inclusion.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic program design, project oversight, and technical capacity building.
  • A collaborative leader with strong interpersonal and influencing skills, able to build trust and foster cross-cultural partnerships.
  • A strong communicator with the ability to produce clear, actionable technical guidance and learning resources.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Proficiency in a second language—particularly French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or Swahili—is a significant advantage.
