The Horn of Africa Institute for Peace and Security (HOAIPS) is inviting passionate individuals to apply for its upcoming volunteer internship programme, aimed at contributing to regional peace, security, and innovation in the Horn of Africa.

As a non-profit organization, HOAIPS is committed to fostering stability and sustainable peace in the region through a blend of policy research, conflict transformation, peacebuilding, training, dialogue, and digital innovation. Operating without direct funding, the Institute relies on the dedication of committed volunteers and professionals who share a vision for a peaceful Horn of Africa.

These remote, part-time internships offer emerging leaders and early-career professionals a chance to develop hands-on experience while contributing meaningfully to peace and security initiatives. Interns will be involved in core areas such as event coordination, research, data analysis, AI development, and community engagement.

Internship Opportunities:

1. PeaceTalks+ Coordination Intern (2 positions)

Interns in this role will coordinate the planning and delivery of weekly PeaceTalks+ webinars, a flagship series of discussions on peace and security.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and schedule weekly sessions
  • Coordinate with panellists, moderators, and support teams
  • Prepare session briefs and promotional content
  • Manage logistics and post-session documentation

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Familiarity with webinar platforms
  • Passion for regional peace and dialogue

2. Peace Briefs Coordination Intern (2 positions)

This role supports the creation and distribution of concise and insightful Peace Briefs focused on the region’s most pressing issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers and editors
  • Source and verify relevant data
  • Oversee timely release and archival of briefs
  • Contribute to content accuracy and clarity

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Strong writing and research abilities
  • Attention to detail
  • Interest in political and security analysis

3. Peace AI Intelligence Data Analysis & Research Intern (1 position)

This intern will support data operations related to the Horn Peace Intelligence AI platform, focused on real-time conflict monitoring and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Integrate and clean data from multiple sources
  • Support video conferencing and cloud services
  • Conduct quality assurance and trend analysis
  • Contribute to weekly reporting

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Background or interest in data science or statistics
  • Familiarity with data validation processes
  • Strong analytical thinking and regional awareness

4. ICT & AI Development Intern (1 position)

This position supports digital platform development across HOAIPS tools, including Peace AI, the HOAIPS website, and HornConnect.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Web and platform maintenance
  • Assist with AI deployment
  • Ensure digital security and accessibility
  • Contribute to workflow documentation

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Background in computer science or software development
  • Experience with web technologies
  • Understanding of AI/ML is a plus

5. HPSN Community Engagement & Communications Intern (2 positions)

This intern will focus on growing and managing the Horn Peace and Security Network (HPSN) and related communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with community members and recruit new ones
  • Facilitate online discussions and events
  • Manage newsletters, social media, and event promotion
  • Coordinate with working groups to publish updates

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Experience or interest in community management
  • Strong communication and digital media skills
  • Dedication to regional peacebuilding efforts
