European Institute of Peace (EIP) is Seeking a Research Analyst : Environment and Gender in Yemen – Apply Before 24 August 2025

(Service Provider – Consultancy Contract)
Application Deadline: 24 August 2025
Contract Duration: 3 September – 31 December 2025 (approx. 30 workdays)
The European Institute of Peace (EIP) is seeking a Research Analyst to support its work on environmental and gender dimensions of conflict in Yemen. This consultancy role focuses on producing technical research that will inform an ongoing dialogue process aimed at reducing environmental conflict risks while promoting gender-responsive solutions.
Based in Brussels, EIP is an independent organisation working across over a dozen countries. It collaborates directly with conflict-affected communities, local and national stakeholders, and European and international actors to deliver practical tools for conflict prevention, resolution, and inclusive peacebuilding.
About the Project
This assignment falls under the Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation (EPfR) project, implemented by EIP’s Climate and Environmental Peacemaking Programme (CEPM) in partnership with the Gender and Peacemaking Programme (GPM). The project uses environmental challenges as entry points for promoting cooperation, building trust, and supporting sustainable peace in Yemen.
The EPfR project brings together multiple sectors of Yemeni society to identify conflict risks stemming from unsustainable natural resource governance, climate impacts, and environmental degradation. Gender is a cross-cutting focus, with the project aiming to explore how women’s knowledge and leadership can contribute to environmental governance and peacebuilding.
Role Overview
The Research Analyst will conduct independent research and contribute to the development of policy-relevant outputs focused on the nexus of gender, environment, climate and peace in Yemen. The work will support a technical dialogue process by generating evidence and recommendations that promote inclusive, sustainable governance of natural resources.
Key sectors of focus are expected to include water, pollution and waste management, and fisheries/coastal environments. A strong gender lens is required throughout all aspects of the research.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Analysis
- Conduct comprehensive desk research and literature reviews on environmental governance challenges in Yemen, integrating gender-sensitive perspectives.
- Identify and document the roles, experiences, and leadership of women in shaping environmental decisions, mitigating climate risks, and leading community-level sustainability initiatives.
- Conduct key informant interviews with local and international stakeholders, including women’s organisations and environmental actors.
- Analyse environmental insecurity and natural resource management from both a technical and gender perspective.
Written Outputs
- Deliver an approximately 30-page research report summarising key findings and offering practical, inclusive recommendations for conflict prevention and sustainable governance.
- Translate technical findings into accessible, actionable language suitable for a range of audiences.
- Support the development of related materials, such as policy briefs, summary reports, or presentations tailored to specific sectors (e.g., water governance).
Collaboration and Contribution
- Maintain regular engagement with the CEPM and GPM teams through meetings and reporting updates.
- Apply feminist research principles and uphold high standards of gender sensitivity throughout.
- Remain flexible to adjust research focus or deliverables in response to developments within the ongoing dialogue process.
Where appropriate, the analyst may be invited to present findings as part of the dialogue process—either virtually or in person—potentially requiring travel to Amman, Jordan or another regional location.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- University degree in political/social sciences, environmental studies, gender studies, peace studies, or a relevant field, or equivalent work experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in environmental peacebuilding, climate security, gender and conflict resolution, or related areas.
- Strong track record of applied research, particularly in the intersection of women’s rights, peace processes, and climate/environmental governance.
- Knowledge of Yemen’s environmental and social context is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working with Yemeni stakeholders, including civil society, academic institutions, and public entities, is an asset.
- Excellent English communication skills (oral and written); Arabic proficiency is a significant advantage.
