In alignment with its commitment to safe, inclusive programming, YAI is recruiting a Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Officer. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring that all interventions are gender-transformative, disability-inclusive, and compliant with safeguarding policies. This position is based in Abuja, with responsibility for working across projects and partners throughout Nigeria.

Role Summary

The Safeguarding, Gender and Inclusion Officer will serve as a technical advisor and implementation support to partners, ensuring integration of gender-responsive and inclusive strategies throughout the project lifecycle. This includes oversight of gender analysis, inclusive design, capacity building, safeguarding systems, and monitoring of programme delivery. The role also serves as a focal point for Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH).

Key Responsibilities

Gender and Inclusion

  • Provide technical guidance for the integration of gender-transformative approaches in programme design and delivery.
  • Support the conduct of gender analysis and identification of barriers to participation for marginalised youth, particularly young women and girls, youth with disabilities, and refugee youth.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of inclusion strategies across projects and contribute to organisational policy development.
  • Develop training materials and conduct workshops on gender equality, social inclusion, and youth-centred approaches.
  • Monitor gender and inclusion indicators, analyse impacts, and report on progress towards inclusive outcomes.

Disability Inclusion

  • Assist implementing partners in identifying and engaging with Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to support outreach, screening, and enrolment of young persons with disabilities.
  • Ensure the delivery of disability sensitisation training for project staff, trainers, and youth participants.
  • Coordinate with OPDs to ensure appropriate accommodations are in place to enable equitable participation in skills training programmes.

Safeguarding and PSEAH

  • Lead safeguarding awareness and capacity-building efforts among YAI staff and implementing partners.
  • Develop tools and guidelines to strengthen localised safeguarding systems and referral pathways.
  • Monitor safeguarding compliance across partner organisations and provide continuous technical support.
  • Act as a trusted focal point for receiving and escalating safeguarding concerns, including PSEAH incidents.
  • Ensure all project participants and staff adhere to YAI’s safeguarding policies and code of conduct.

Programme Implementation, Monitoring, and Learning

  • Provide technical oversight for safeguarding and inclusion activities at the duty station and partner sites.
  • Contribute to regular reporting, including donor reports, by documenting good practices, case studies, lessons learned, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Support gender-sensitive data collection and contribute to knowledge management.
  • Represent YAI in coordination meetings and technical working groups on gender, disability inclusion, and safeguarding.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, Development Studies, Human Rights, or a related field is required.
  • A Master’s degree will be considered an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in gender equity, safeguarding, or social inclusion roles, ideally within education, entrepreneurship, or youth development programmes.
  • Proven track record of working with marginalised groups, including women, youth with disabilities, and survivors of gender-based violence.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding frameworks and international standards, including those related to PSEAH.
  • Experience designing and facilitating training and awareness-raising sessions for diverse stakeholder groups.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent facilitation and training skills, particularly in participatory methodologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with demonstrated ability to write reports, develop guidelines, and engage diverse audiences.
  • Experience in advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and community mobilisation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across cultures and sectors.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one local Nigerian language is required.
