Funded Traineeships for Young Graduates at the EU Delegation to Canada – Apply Before 5 September 2025

The Delegation of the European Union to Canada, located in Ottawa, is offering funded traineeships of up to six months for young graduates interested in international relations and EU affairs. This opportunity is ideal for individuals seeking to gain hands-on experience in the work of a diplomatic mission and to better understand how the EU engages with Canada.

The upcoming traineeship round will start between 15 October and 30 November 2025, and applications must be submitted by 5 September 2025, 12:00 Ottawa time.

Available Traineeship Sections

The EU Delegation is currently recruiting trainees for the following two sections:

1. Political, Press and Information Section (PPI)

This section is responsible for communications, political analysis, media engagement, and public diplomacy. The selected trainee will work closely with EU staff to support various aspects of the Delegation’s outreach and political reporting activities.

Main Responsibilities:

• Prepare the daily media press review
• Conduct research and draft reports on current developments in EU-Canada relations
• Assist in the creation and curation of content for the Delegation’s social media platforms
• Support the organization of public diplomacy events and campaigns
• Contribute to coordination efforts with EU Member States (political, press, and consular)
• Provide ad hoc support for various activities within the section

Preferred Qualifications:

• A strong interest in international relations, communications, or diplomacy
• Background in international relations, politics, or communication studies
• Familiarity with the Canadian political context is an asset
• Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills
• Fluency in both English and French (spoken and written)
• Proficiency in social media tools
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team

2. Trade and Economic Section (TRADE)

This section deals with trade relations, economic policy, and the implementation of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The trainee will support the Delegation’s work in these areas through research, analysis, and communication.

Main Responsibilities:

• Compile and distribute the daily press review with a focus on trade and economic topics
• Conduct research and prepare reports on Canada’s economic, trade, and environmental/climate policies
• Monitor developments related to CETA implementation and identify success stories
• Contribute to communication efforts on EU-Canada cooperation in trade, environment, and economic matters
• Provide general support to the Trade Section as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

• Interest in economics, trade, or business administration
• Background in international economics, international trade, or related disciplines
• Academic or practical experience with EU-Canada trade relations or environmental policy is a plus
• Strong writing and analytical abilities
• Fluency in English and French is essential
• Team-oriented mindset and adaptability in a multicultural environment

Eligibility and Application Process

To apply, candidates must meet the general eligibility criteria for paid traineeships with the EU External Action Service. These include holding a university degree and being a national of an EU Member State or a third country with which the EU has concluded bilateral agreements.

Important Notes

• Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to assist with living expenses.
• Travel, visa, accommodation, and insurance costs must be covered by the trainee.
• Candidates must ensure full compliance with visa and residency requirements for Canada based on their nationality and the duration of the traineeship.
• EU citizens must also show proof of coverage for pandemic-related risks and repatriation.
• Traineeships are offered in accordance with local Canadian laws and the legislation of the applicant’s country of origin.
