UNHCR Associate Reporting Officer – Dadaab, Kenya

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is seeking an Associate Reporting Officer for a 12-month onsite assignment in Dadaab, Kenya, starting on August 25, 2025. This assignment, with the possibility of extension, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to UNHCR’s mission of protecting refugees and displaced persons, while enhancing visibility, accountability, and reporting in a complex humanitarian context. Applications are open until August 12, 2025.

About UNHCR

Established on 14 December 1950, UNHCR leads and coordinates international efforts to protect refugees and resolve displacement crises globally. Its mandate is to ensure that everyone can seek asylum, find safe refuge in another country, and have access to durable solutions, whether returning home voluntarily, integrating locally, or resettling in a third country.

Context: Dadaab Refugee Complex

Dadaab hosts a protracted refugee situation alongside new arrivals fleeing drought and insecurity in Somalia. Since its establishment in 1991, the Dadaab Refugee Complex has become home to over 432,000 refugees (81,678 households), with Somali refugees making up more than 96% of the population. Kenya currently hosts 854,876 refugees and asylum seekers.

Refugees in Dadaab face extreme challenges, including limited access to basic services, restricted freedom of movement, poor shelter, and minimal infrastructure. UNHCR, in collaboration with the Kenyan Government’s Department of Refugee Services (DRS) and other partners, advocates for effective protection and durable solutions. The Garissa Integrated Socio-Economic Development Program (GISEDP), launched in 2023, aims to foster economic growth, empower communities, and transform camps into socio-economic hubs.
