The Miles Morland Foundation has announced the opening of the 2025 Morland Writing Scholarships for African writers. Submissions will be accepted from Tuesday, 1st July 2025, with the deadline for entries on Friday, 19th September 2025. Prospective applicants are advised to carefully review the Entry Requirements and FAQs on the foundation’s website, as submissions that do not meet the outlined criteria will not be considered.
The foundation encourages entries from both new applicants and previous candidates who were not successful in earlier years. For returning applicants, it is recommended that their book proposals and sample submissions show significant development compared to previous entries. While this is not mandatory, improvement and evolution in the submission will be positively regarded by the judging panel.
Selection and Judging
Four new scholars will be selected in November 2025, when the winners will be publicly announced. The judging panel for this year has been strengthened with the addition of Goretti Kyomuhendo, an accomplished author and founding member of FEMWRITE, a women’s writing association. Goretti has also established the African Writer’s Trust, which has successfully organized writing workshops and conferences connecting African writers across the continent and diaspora. Her experience and insight into African literature are expected to enrich the selection process.
The foundation also extends its gratitude to Bibi Bakare-Yussuf, who has served as a distinguished judge for six years, contributing extensive knowledge of African literature and invaluable guidance in evaluating submissions.
