About the Program
The OIST Research Internship Program offers talented undergraduate and master’s students the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience at a world-leading interdisciplinary graduate university located in Okinawa, Japan. Interns work directly under the supervision of OIST faculty and are fully integrated into lab activities.
This competitive program allows students to deepen their scientific understanding, gain practical skills, and explore career paths in advanced research. Interns may also use their experience as a potential step toward admission to the OIST PhD program.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be currently enrolled in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree OR any year of a master’s degree, OR have recently graduated with a BSc or MSc.
- Be enrolled in or recently graduated from universities, colleges, junior colleges, or vocational schools in Japan or abroad.
- Currently enrolled students must obtain approval from their home institution.
- Candidates must demonstrate academic preparation relevant to the OIST faculty unit they wish to join.
- OIST encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including women and students from diverse backgrounds.
- PhD students or graduates are not eligible. They should explore workshops or career opportunities at OIST instead.

Note: This is an unpaid internship. Travel and accommodation arrangements may need to be organized independently unless otherwise specified.
Required Application Documents
Applicants must submit the following in English via OIST’s online application portal:
- Academic Transcript(s) and Diploma
- PDF scans of current and past transcripts (BSc/MSc)
- Certificate of enrollment or expected graduation if diploma not yet available
- English translation required for non-English transcripts
- Statement of Purpose (Max. 400 words / 2,500 characters)
- Fit between your academic background and desired OIST research unit(s)
- Your goals during the internship
- How the internship aligns with your career aspirations
- Recommendation Letter(s) (1–3 required)
- Must be from professorial-level faculty or professional supervisors
- Recommenders will receive automated requests via the OIST system
- Letters must be confidential and submitted directly to OIST
- Passport Scan
- Valid passport photo page required for international applicants
- If unavailable at time of application, alternative ID may be temporarily submitted
- ID Photo
- A recent, front-facing passport-style photo taken within the last 3 months
Optional Documents
- English Proficiency Test Score (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS) – Optional but recommended if available
Application Fee
- A non-refundable processing fee of 3,000 JPY is required
- Fee waivers are not available
- Payment issues due to sanctions must be communicated through the contact form (select “Research Internship”)
Special Notes
- OIST internships may count as a lab rotation toward the OIST PhD program if you enroll within a year and complete at least four months.
- Japanese students must obtain appropriate insurance (e.g., Gakkensai + Gakkenbai).
- Applications are only accepted via the official online portal. Prepare all documents in advance in PDF format.
- Applications can be saved and completed later.
- Submission is only possible once at least one recommendation letter is received in the system.
