DanChurchAid (DCA), a Danish faith-based humanitarian and development organization, is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and competent Climate Advocacy Officer to join its Kenya Country Office in Nairobi. This position is embedded within DCA’s global climate advocacy team and plays a key role in advancing climate justice through strategic advocacy initiatives at both regional and global levels.
While the successful candidate will work from DCA’s Kenya Office under the day-to-day oversight of the Country Director, the position is functionally accountable to the Global Climate Lead based in Copenhagen. Occasional international travel may be required.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of the Climate Advocacy Officer is to support and implement international climate advocacy initiatives developed in collaboration with DCA’s Global Climate Lead and advocacy team. This role will directly contribute to strengthening DCA’s climate justice agenda by engaging in policy processes, building strategic alliances, and supporting advocacy actions designed to influence key decision-makers.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and strategic analysis of international climate policies, frameworks, and negotiations, ensuring alignment with DCA’s advocacy priorities.
- Actively engage in relevant climate networks, coalitions, and alliances to amplify DCA’s climate justice agenda.
- Foster and maintain meaningful dialogues with policymakers, duty bearers, civil society organizations, and other relevant stakeholders in the climate space.
- Collaborate with the global climate advocacy team to design, coordinate, and implement targeted advocacy campaigns and public events.
- Oversee practical and logistical arrangements for advocacy-related activities, including preparation of materials and coordination of participants.
- Contribute to overall project management responsibilities, including budgeting, monitoring, reporting, and documentation of results and lessons learned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- A university degree in Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Geography, Natural Resource Management, Social Studies, Communication, Project Management, or a related discipline.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience working in climate change-related advocacy.
- Demonstrated experience in international collaboration and engagement in cross-border advocacy networks.
- Proven track record of successfully planning and implementing advocacy activities, including public campaigns, stakeholder consultations, or policy dialogues.
- Experience in project management, including familiarity with budgets and monitoring frameworks.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex climate issues into compelling advocacy messages.
- Self-driven and able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to engage with a wide range of actors.
- High degree of initiative, creativity, and strategic thinking.
- Proficient in spoken and written English.
- Full legal right to work in Kenya. Only Kenyan nationals are eligible for this position.
