ICCROM is Hiring: Project Officer (IP-3)

ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Project Officer to lead a strategic initiative titled “Towards Sustainable Development in Africa: Transformative Capacity Building to Advance Craftsmanship in Cultural Heritage Conservation.” The position is based at ICCROM Headquarters in Rome and is offered at the IP-3 grade level.

Role Overview

Reporting to senior leadership, the Project Officer will assume overall responsibility for managing, coordinating, and implementing the project in alignment with ICCROM’s strategic priorities and the Mattei Plan objectives of the Italian Government. The incumbent will serve as Project Coordinator and oversee activities across four African countries—Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Egypt, and Tunisia—while liaising closely with the Fabbrica di San Pietro of the Holy See and other international stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The Project Officer will be responsible for the intellectual, strategic, and operational leadership of the project. Duties include:

  • Planning, supervising, and delivering all project components—from inception and research to training, seed grants, and certification programs.
  • Ensuring alignment with ICCROM’s Strategic Framework and managing cross-cultural partnerships.
  • Facilitating collaborative knowledge exchange between African artisans and Vatican craftsmasters.
  • Overseeing the project’s monitoring and evaluation systems to assess socio-economic and environmental impacts.
  • Coordinating budget management, procurement, and logistical support in close collaboration with internal administrative and finance teams.
  • Mobilizing voluntary contributions to sustain the project and contributing to ICCROM’s broader resource mobilization efforts.
  • Leading risk assessments and implementing adaptive strategies to navigate changes in the project landscape.
  • Promoting the project internationally, under the guidance of the Director-General, and representing ICCROM at global forums and events.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:
An advanced university degree in project management, international relations, development studies, business administration, or a related field is required. A background in heritage conservation, heritage studies, or cultural entrepreneurship is considered an asset.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of international experience managing multi-million-euro projects with complex, multi-country operations.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing innovative cultural heritage or conservation programmes.
  • Prior experience in Africa is highly desirable.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong familiarity with capacity building, intercultural education, and business incubation.
  • In-depth understanding of the role of culture in international relations and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of the UN Common System is an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English and French (oral and written) is essential. Knowledge of additional languages is a plus. Proficiency in Italian is strongly preferred or a commitment to learn it rapidly.

Remuneration

The salary is net of taxes but subject to deductions for medical insurance and pension contributions under the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund. Full details are available under the UN Professional and Higher Categories Salary Scales.
