UNDRR Is Recruiting for 17 Expert Positions to Tackle Disaster Risk Worldwide

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is currently seeking professionals and consultants to support its mission in building global resilience to disasters. As the UN system’s focal point for disaster risk reduction (DRR), UNDRR leads global efforts to reduce disaster risks and losses through strategic partnerships, early warning systems, and capacity-building across all sectors.

Consultancy Opportunities

1. Researcher – Budget Tagging and Financing Options for DRR (Central America & Dominican Republic)

  • Level: Consultant
  • Key Focus: Support the development of financing strategies for disaster risk reduction with an emphasis on anticipatory action.
  • Eligibility:
    • Advanced university degree in economics, public finance, or related field.
    • Proven experience in budget tagging, DRR financing, and anticipatory action frameworks.
    • Familiarity with Central American and Caribbean regional financial systems is preferred.

2. Integration of Resilience Criteria in Critical Infrastructure

  • Level: Consultant
  • Key Focus: Mainstream resilience standards into public and private infrastructure development.
  • Eligibility:
    • Background in civil engineering, urban planning, or infrastructure resilience.
    • Experience with resilience scoring or standards such as ISO or Sendai Framework integration.

3. Analysis of Probabilistic Risk Assessment Results – Costa Rica

  • Level: Consultant
  • Key Focus: Analyze and interpret probabilistic risk models to inform national reconstruction strategies.
  • Eligibility:
    • Master’s degree in disaster risk science, statistics, or geography.
    • Experience with risk modeling tools (e.g., CAPRA, HAZUS).
    • Prior work with national governments or reconstruction projects is an asset.

  • Key Focus: Provide technical support to key Haitian institutions to improve national risk knowledge.
  • Eligibility:
    • Strong technical background in hazard mapping, early warning systems, or geospatial data.
    • Fluency in French and experience working in Haiti is a strong advantage.

  • Level: Consultant
  • Key Focus: Assess volcanic risk in Guatemala and support integration into national DRR systems.

    • Familiarity with Latin American hazard data.

13. Programme Management Officer – P-4

  • Level: P-4
  • Key Focus: Lead the design and management of complex DRR projects and strategic partnerships.
  • Eligibility:
    • Advanced degree in international development, project management, or environmental policy.
    • At least 7 years of experience in managing large-scale DRR or humanitarian programmes.
    • UN system experience is a plus.
