C4 EcoSolutions (C4) is seeking a Lead Consultant (Climate Adaptation) to join its Cape Town-based team under a hybrid work model. The successful candidate will provide leadership in climate adaptation consulting, focusing on the design, implementation, and evaluation of international climate resilience projects.

C4 collaborates with global development institutions, national governments, and local communities to co-develop impactful climate adaptation solutions. The Lead Consultant will support technical delivery across a broad range of assignments involving the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Adaptation Fund (AF), among others.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a dynamic, strategic, and solution-oriented professional with substantial experience in environmental consulting, climate adaptation, or international development. A demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams, engage clients, and produce technically sound, high-quality work is essential.

Applicants should be confident communicators, capable of managing multiple priorities, and committed to excellence, inclusion, and continuous learning. A growth mindset and the ability to both provide and receive mentorship are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management

  • Develop project plans, track deliverables, and ensure timely, high-quality outputs.
  • Recommend financing options and strategic solutions to clients.
  • Review and guide junior team members’ contributions, offering mentorship and structured feedback.
  • Independently manage projects with strategic support from senior colleagues.

2. Team Leadership

  • Foster a positive and inclusive team environment, addressing operational and interpersonal needs.
  • Support onboarding, training, and capacity development of team members.
  • Identify skill gaps and deploy external consultants as needed.
  • Lead client communication, including meetings, updates, and technical reporting.
  • Oversee the development of major deliverables such as adaptation proposals, technical reports, and stakeholder engagement documents.

3. Business Development

  • Engage existing clients to identify opportunities to scale or expand ongoing projects.
  • Support or lead the development of funding proposals and concept notes.
  • Identify new opportunities via procurement platforms and networks; lead their pursuit.
  • Serve as capture lead and technical strategist on proposal development.

4. Organisational Culture & Growth

  • Pursue professional development and keep abreast of emerging trends and policies.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, values-driven workplace rooted in respect, positivity, and well-being.

Essential Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree (preferably Master’s or PhD) in Environmental Science, Climate Change, International Development, or a related field.
  • 4–7 years of experience in climate adaptation project development.
  • Strong project management and multitasking skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Experience in guiding and mentoring junior staff.
  • Excellent English writing skills, with a record of authoring technical documents.
  • Demonstrated success in designing projects for global climate funds (GCF, GEF, AF).
  • Experience in Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) or Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
