The Carnegie Africa Program is seeking a Nonresident Scholar to contribute high-impact, policy-relevant analysis on economic and political developments in the Sahel and French-speaking West Africa. The position offers a unique opportunity to shape U.S. foreign policy thinking through rigorous research and engagement on key regional dynamics.

About the Role

The selected scholar will contribute across the program’s core workstreams, producing analysis that informs U.S. policy toward countries in the region. The position is nonresident and part-time, designed to accommodate professionals with ongoing responsibilities elsewhere. The scholar will receive a monthly stipend and benefit from the Carnegie Endowment’s global platform.


Key Responsibilities

  • Produce timely, original research and commentary on economic development, political economy, and international economic relations in the Sahel and French-speaking West Africa.
  • Publish policy-relevant outputs including op-eds, policy briefs, and analytical papers.
  • Engage with U.S. policymakers, practitioners, and the broader policy community.
  • Collaborate with Carnegie’s team of regional and thematic experts.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will demonstrate a deep understanding of West African political and economic systems and strong communication skills across audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional Experience: Substantial experience in government, academia, nonprofits, or the private sector with a focus on the economic development or political economy of the Sahel and French-speaking West Africa.
  • Regional Expertise: Deep knowledge of at least two countries in the region, with demonstrated analytical depth.
  • In-Region Experience: Residence in West Africa or significant on-the-ground professional or research experience.
  • Advanced Degree: Master’s, MBA, PhD, or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Bilingual Fluency: Strong written and spoken proficiency in both English and French.
  • Policy Writing: A solid record of policy-oriented publications, such as op-eds, white papers, or policy briefs.
