SOS MEDITERRANEE is a European maritime and humanitarian rescue organization founded in 2015 to respond to the human tragedy in the Central Mediterranean — the deadliest migratory sea route since 2014. Established by a coalition of European citizens, the organization operates in France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, with a unified mission to:

  • Rescue individuals in distress at sea
  • Provide protection and assistance to survivors
  • Raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean

Since launching rescue operations in 2016, SOS MEDITERRANEE has saved over 41,700 lives through missions carried out aboard vessels such as the Aquarius and Ocean Viking.

Role Summary: Outreach Support Trainer (Remote)

SOS MEDITERRANEE is seeking a Remote Outreach Support Trainer to assist in the development and delivery of high-quality training sessions. This role supports the Outreach Manager and will involve both remote coordination and in-person delivery of maritime and rescue training to partner organizations.

This is a short-term fixed contract (16 days) suitable for a professional with strong maritime SAR experience and advanced training capabilities. The role is remote-based, except for travel during actual training sessions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gain and maintain a comprehensive understanding of SOS MEDITERRANEE’s training materials and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach Manager and instructors to review current training standards.
  • Deliver professional training sessions adapted to different partner organizations.
  • Uphold professional conduct and appearance, particularly in environments involving military or institutional actors.
  • Adjust training content and methods following initial delivery, as necessary.
  • Draft detailed capitalization reports for each training session.
  • Manage confidentiality of training experiences and ensure SOS MEDITERRANEE’s operational integrity.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of SAR (Search and Rescue) training frameworks.

Required Profile

Training & Facilitation

  • Proven experience delivering presentations and leading training sessions, including real-time drills at sea.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and the ability to adapt content to varied audiences.

Search and Rescue (SAR) Expertise

  • Minimum of one year operating in the Central Mediterranean on NGO maritime assets.
  • Direct experience in decision-making roles such as leading Emergency Zones (EZ1, EZ2, or complex EZ3 operations).
  • Strong knowledge of SAR risk assessment and management procedures.
  • Preferably, over one year of experience operating with SOS MEDITERRANEE’s rescue team on RIBs.
  • Additional experience on diverse SAR assets (e.g., cruisers, jet skis) is valued.

IT Proficiency

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Professional demeanor, including grooming standards suitable for high-level institutional contexts.
  • Ability to remain neutral and composed in challenging environments, including settings with skepticism toward NGO activity or SAR missions.
  • Fluent in both French and English (spoken and written).
  • High flexibility and willingness to travel as needed.

Contract Details

  • Contract Type: Fixed-term (16 days including travel)
  • Salary Range: €2,730 to €3,800 gross/month (pro-rata based on experience and SOS MEDITERRANEE’s salary grid)
  • Work Location: Remote, except during field training delivery
  • Start Date: Flexible, aligned with training schedule
