The South Asian Institute for Crime and Justice Studies (SAICJS) is an interdisciplinary research and policy platform dedicated to exploring the intersections of gender, law, carcerality, and justice across South Asia. Through rigorous research, collaborative dialogues, and network-building initiatives, SAICJS addresses pressing issues such as women’s incarceration, organized crime, climate displacement, and criminal legal reform. The Institute operates with a deep commitment to justice, equity, and knowledge production grounded in regional contexts.

About the Role

SAICJS invites applications for the position of Research and Communications Associate. This part-time opportunity is suited for early-career professionals, graduate students, or independent researchers interested in social justice, gender issues, and legal systems in South Asia. The position involves a blend of research support and communications work, with meaningful scope for growth, learning, and publication.

The Associate will play an integral role in supporting ongoing projects, including those related to gendered pathways to incarceration, climate displacement and human trafficking, and carceral reforms in the region.

This is a remote position with flexible hours and a supportive work environment designed to foster mentorship and collaborative learning.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Fieldwork Support (60%)

  • Conduct desk research and literature reviews on topics such as carcerality, gender justice, trafficking, and climate-induced displacement
  • Assist in the development and refinement of research tools (e.g., surveys, interview guides)
  • Support fieldwork preparation, coordination, and documentation when required
  • Contribute to data analysis and assist in drafting research briefs, reports, and policy materials
  • Identify relevant funding opportunities and assist with proposal preparation

Communications and Administrative Support (40%)

  • Assist with internal and external communications, including liaising with partners and collaborators
  • Manage and update the Institute’s website (WordPress) and maintain a consistent presence across social media platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Instagram)
  • Support the creation and dissemination of public knowledge materials using tools such as Canva
  • Help organize online events, webinars, and workshops

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will bring a mix of academic curiosity, digital fluency, and a strong commitment to justice-oriented research. SAICJS is especially interested in individuals who demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and a regional understanding of South Asian sociopolitical contexts.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, public policy, law, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred or currently in progress)
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Familiarity with gender justice, legal systems, or South Asian sociopolitical issues
  • Comfort working with digital platforms and tools (Google Workspace, WordPress, Canva, basic data handling tools)
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Prior experience with fieldwork, communications, or advocacy will be considered an asset

Supervision and Mentorship

The selected candidate will report directly to the Founder of SAICJS and collaborate with a small, collegial team. The Institute offers mentorship support and encourages associates to co-author outputs, contribute to publications, and participate in convenings and research dialogues.

Remuneration
