Royal Danish Embassy Kenya is Seeking a Programme Staff – Development and Resilience Team

The Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi is seeking an experienced Programme Staff member to support the Somalia Bilateral Development Programme within its Development and Resilience Team. This is a full-time, 2-year locally contracted position with the possibility of extension, based in Nairobi with responsibilities tied to Somalia-focused development efforts.

The Programme Staff will contribute directly to the planning, implementation, and financial oversight of complex development projects in fragile contexts. The focus areas of the programme include climate change adaptation and green growth, state-building and human rights, and resilience programming within a humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day project management, including tracking work plans, budgets, and reporting timelines across 8+ development engagements.
  • Oversee financial management, including reviewing partner budgets, audited accounts, and managing disbursements in line with Danida Aid Management and Financial Guidelines.
  • Support contract management and act as procurement focal point for the portfolio.
  • Coordinate MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) processes across the programme.
  • Liaise with Embassy colleagues and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure coherence with related policy and programmatic efforts.
  • Assist in organizing thematic field visits, stakeholder events, and serve as focal point for Danida Fellowship Centre training activities.
  • Maintain compliance and documentation for all programme components; contribute to strategic learning and adaptive programming.

Candidate Profile

Minimum qualifications:

  • MSc/MA in international relations, development, political science, finance, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in programme or financial management within international development organizations or donor agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in fragile or conflict-affected environments, preferably in Somalia or the Horn of Africa.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-partner development programmes and ensure rigorous financial compliance.

Key skills:

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail and commitment to delivering results.
  • Excellent communication and writing abilities in English; Somali or Danish language skills are a plus.
  • Experience with donor compliance, especially Danida or EU-funded programmes, is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills; capable of working within political and policy-oriented environments.
