Founded in 1999, Mongabay is a nonprofit environmental news organization dedicated to providing original, independent reporting on conservation, biodiversity, and environmental justice issues. We publish in multiple languages and reach a global audience that includes scientists, policymakers, civil society leaders, and the general public.

Mongabay’s Investigations Desk plays a key role in exposing environmental crimes, systemic corruption in natural resource industries, and threats to environmental defenders. Our work aims to increase transparency and hold corporations, governments, and other institutions accountable through evidence-based journalism.

Position Overview

Mongabay is seeking a highly motivated Investigative Researcher and Reporter to join our Investigations team. The ideal candidate is an experienced investigative journalist with strong research and verification skills and a deep understanding of environmental issues, particularly those related to governance, extractive industries, and Indigenous land rights.

In this role, you will contribute to investigative research, fact-checking, and writing. You will be responsible for producing an average of two original news stories per month and supporting the broader editorial team with pre-publication research, risk reviews, and legal coordination.

This is a full-time, remote position, open to applicants worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Reporting (90%)

  • Monitor environmental issues and identify stories aligned with Mongabay’s investigative priorities.
  • Produce detailed research briefs for investigative projects.
  • Maintain structured research files, databases, and methodologies.
  • Conduct interviews, background checks, and source development.
  • Collaborate with Mongabay editors and writers to integrate investigative findings into news coverage.
  • Fact-check articles prior to publication and coordinate right-of-reply communications and legal reviews.
  • Draft, edit, and publish investigative content using Mongabay’s CMS (WordPress).
  • Source and produce supporting visuals such as photos, charts, maps, or videos.

Strategic and Administrative Support (10%)

  • Report regularly to the Investigations Editor on progress and editorial objectives.
  • Track story impact, such as republication and policy influence, for grant reporting.
  • Participate in editorial planning and workflow tracking using project management tools.
  • Monitor investigative journalism trends and share relevant best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of experience in investigative journalism.
  • Strong research and verification skills; familiarity with data collection and source vetting.
  • Fluency in English, with exceptional writing and editing ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues clearly to general audiences.
  • Proven capacity to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with visual media (charts, maps, or multimedia).
  • Access to reliable high-speed internet and comfort with virtual collaboration tools (Zoom, Asana, email, CMS platforms).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with environmental reporting or familiarity with conservation, natural resource governance, extractive industries, or supply chains.
  • Background in cross-border investigative collaborations.
  • Understanding of risk assessments, especially related to field investigations or environmental defenders.
  • Ability to synthesize legal, policy, and scientific documents.
  • Familiarity with data visualization or investigative tools such as FOIA processes, databases, or satellite imagery.
  • Additional language proficiency, especially in regions relevant to Mongabay’s reporting.

Compensation and Location
