About GGON

The Global Gas and Oil Network (GGON) is an international nonprofit initiative uniting over 300 civil society organizations across 60+ countries. Established in 2017, GGON supports the global movement to halt fossil fuel expansion and accelerate a just, equitable transition away from oil and gas production in alignment with the 1.5°C climate target.

GGON functions as a virtual secretariat, providing movement infrastructure through convenings, commissioned research, strategic communications, and support to regional and thematic coalitions. With a strong commitment to justice, biodiversity, and the empowerment of Global South voices, GGON plays a pivotal role in catalyzing informed, collective action.

Role Summary

The Research Coordinator will lead GGON’s research agenda, strengthening connections across a diverse network of researchers, campaigners, and analysts. They will coordinate joint projects, revitalise the Research Working Group, and develop the new “GGON Research Hub”—a central, accessible resource for campaigners and decision-makers within the movement.

This individual will drive the co-creation and dissemination of cutting-edge research, ensuring it supports strategic decision-making across the network. A strong facilitator, communicator, and collaborator, the Research Coordinator will also play a key role in promoting research leadership from the Global South and elevating underrepresented perspectives in climate discourse.

Key Responsibilities

1. Coordinate GGON’s Research Working Group

  • Facilitate inclusive, engaging meetings to shape and implement the group’s shared strategy.
  • Build and manage a diverse network of researchers focused on oil and gas supply, particularly amplifying voices and expertise from the Global South.

2. Ensure Accessible Research for Network Members

  • Respond to research requests by sourcing, summarising, or facilitating connections to relevant insights (“librarian” or “broker” role).
  • Co-develop webinars, briefing notes, and maintain a digital research portal to centralise knowledge.
  • Deliver high-quality summaries and presentations for working groups, funders, and strategic partners.

3. Compile and Commission Strategic Insights

  • Monitor developments in oil and gas policy, emerging risks, and campaign opportunities.
  • Commission and oversee research that supports ongoing movement strategy.
  • Track key metrics to measure progress against the network’s goals.

4. Identify and Support New Research Initiatives

  • Determine emerging research needs across GGON’s regional and thematic groups.
  • Facilitate partnerships with Global South researchers and think tanks to develop new projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and funders to support research fundraising and dissemination.
