Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is Seeking an Academic Research Fellow for 2025-2026 Academic year

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) invites applications for a part-time Workforce Studies Research Fellow position for the 2025–2026 academic year. This opportunity is ideally suited for graduate students in the social sciences or medical residents with a research requirement and a demonstrated interest in health workforce dynamics. The fellowship is structured to run from September through June and is fully remote for candidates residing in the contiguous United States.
About the AAMC and the Workforce Studies Team
The AAMC is a not-for-profit organization committed to advancing medical education, biomedical research, and patient care in the United States. It supports academic medicine by engaging with more than 170 accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools and over 400 teaching hospitals and health systems.
The Workforce Studies team at the AAMC serves as a premier resource for physician workforce projections and applied health workforce research. The team’s mission is to deliver actionable data and insights to stakeholders across academic medicine and the broader healthcare community.
Fellowship Overview
The selected Fellow will contribute to one or more ongoing research projects aligned with the AAMC’s strategic priorities. Fellows will operate under the supervision of senior Workforce Studies staff and may collaborate with other AAMC departments. By the end of the fellowship, participants are expected to co-author at least one publication-quality product and deliver an internal presentation summarizing their findings.
While the fellowship is remote-eligible, the AAMC does not provide travel or accommodation funding.
Sample Research Topics
The Fellow will be involved in research relevant to contemporary issues in physician workforce planning and health equity. Possible project areas include:
- Physician retirement and workforce attrition
- Geographic distribution and practice locations of physicians
- Work hours and clinical productivity patterns
- Population health outcomes and access to care
Fellows may also propose their own research topics, provided they align with the Workforce Studies team’s core priorities.
Research Responsibilities
- Clean and manage large-scale datasets
- Conduct literature reviews
- Perform supervised statistical analysis
- Develop data visualizations (e.g., charts, tables, graphs)
- Draft and revise manuscripts, slide decks, and research briefs
- Attend AAMC seminars and relevant internal meetings
- Assist in other analytical tasks supporting Workforce Studies projects
Datasets Available to Fellows
Fellows will have access to a range of proprietary and nationally representative datasets, including:
- National Sample Survey of Physicians (NSSP) (2019 & 2022 waves): Longitudinal survey data on physician demographics, work-life balance, income, debt, retirement, burnout, and more
- AMA Physician Data: Comprehensive historical data on physician location, demographics, and practice characteristics
- AAMC Consumer Survey of Health Care Access: A nationally representative dataset assessing trends in access to care
Required Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a graduate-level program in public health, public policy, economics, sociology, or a related social science field; or a medical resident with formal research training
- Demonstrated interest in U.S. health care systems and workforce development
- Experience working with survey data
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Competency in statistical software such as Stata, R, SAS, or equivalent
- Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Motivation to publish scholarly work in physician workforce studies
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with longitudinal data analysis
- Spatial analysis capabilities
Compensation and Academic Integration
This is a part-time, remote-eligible position, requiring approximately 20 hours per week. Fellows will be compensated at $23 per hour or may receive academic credit, subject to approval by their home institution. A laptop and relevant software will be provided for the duration of the fellowship.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to align their fellowship project with their Master’s thesis or Ph.D. dissertation to maximize the academic value of their participation.
