About the Institute
Founded in 1970 and based in Sanremo, Italy, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) is an independent, non-profit organization committed to advancing humanitarian principles and human rights. The Institute provides a global platform for education and dialogue through a wide range of training courses, seminars, and conferences on international humanitarian law, human rights law, refugee law, and migration governance.
IIHL enjoys consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), participatory status with the Council of Europe, and observer status at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee, as well as with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law at IIHL specializes in capacity-building activities aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of stakeholders involved in the protection of displaced and stateless populations. Its primary focus includes supporting government officials, civil society actors, international organizations, and academics who work with refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), migrants, and stateless individuals.
Role Summary
The Department is seeking a Project Assistant (Learning Assistant) to contribute to the implementation of its educational and training activities. Working under the supervision of Course Coordinators, the Project Assistant will provide technical, administrative, and research support in the planning, execution, and follow-up of online and in-person learning initiatives. This role is suited to candidates with strong digital learning, communication, and graphic design competencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning, coordination, and logistical execution of training courses and other capacity-building initiatives.
- Support the development, maintenance, and administration of the IIHL Online Learning Platform.
- Participate in meetings with course facilitators to brief them on IIHL’s digital learning methodologies and tools (e.g., Zoom for Education, Moodle).
- Contribute to the design and updating of training modules, sessions, and teaching resources.
- Conduct research and prepare reports, infographics, and statistical materials related to refugee protection, displacement, and migration trends.
- Design and edit visual content for presentations using PowerPoint, Canva, and similar tools.
- Assist in the delivery and moderation of sessions for both virtual and face-to-face formats.
- Provide administrative and technical support to course participants throughout the training cycle.
- Manage correspondence regarding course details and respond to logistical or content-related queries.
- Support translation and communication tasks (e.g., emails, course content) when needed.
- Assist with data collection for monitoring and evaluation processes, including organizing feedback using Excel or survey tools.
- Contribute to communication outputs, including social media content, newsletters, email campaigns (via Brevo), and sourcing appropriate visual materials.
- Perform other duties relevant to the Department’s programmatic activities as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
- University degree in Social Sciences, Adult Education, Instructional Design, Digital Communication, or related fields.
- Proven fluency in English and Spanish, both oral and written.
- Experience organizing online and face-to-face events and trainings.
- Proficiency in digital learning platforms such as Moodle, Zoom for Education, Canva, and Articulate 360.
- Strong skills in graphic design and content creation.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines in an international and multicultural environment.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Background in digital content production (e.g., photography, video editing, visual storytelling).
- Familiarity with social media and digital communications tools, including Brevo.
- Working knowledge of other UN languages (French, Arabic, Russian).
- Experience with instructional design and curriculum development.
- Personal or professional experience related to forced displacement or statelessness.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights, humanitarian values, and inclusion.
- Experience working directly with individuals or communities in need of protection.
