Position Types and Financial Assistance
The selection encompasses three categories of positions:
- Scholarships funded by the University or public/private entities;
- Industrial PhD positions, where employed candidates may carry out research in collaboration with their organisations;
- Self-funded positions, without scholarship support.
Scholarships reserved for specific research topics require candidates to work in alignment with predefined themes. Funding may also be supplemented by EU, national or regional programmes. External scholarships may impose eligibility constraints (e.g. citizenship, age) and are tied to associated research agendas.
Admission Requirements
All candidates, regardless of age or nationality, must hold one of the following by October 31, 2025:
- An Italian specialist degree (D.M. 509/1999) or Master’s degree (D.M. 270/2004);
- A pre-reform degree under the Italian old system;
- A foreign degree deemed equivalent by the Admissions Committee.
Current PhD students without scholarships may apply for a funded place within their programme, but must resign from their existing position if accepted. Applicants who previously received a full PhD scholarship or already hold a PhD cannot qualify for another fully funded scholarship. However, they may enrol without funding if proposing a distinct research area. Applications lacking required documentation, fee payment, or equivalence validation will be excluded.
Recognition of International Qualifications
Degrees awarded outside Italy must be equivalent to an Italian second-cycle qualification and permit PhD access in their country of origin. The Selection Board will assess eligibility in accordance with national and international regulations. Required documents include a master’s diploma, transcripts, full record of academic performance, and additional certifications (e.g. Diploma Supplement, Dichiarazione di valore, CIMEA). These must be submitted in the original language or officially translated into Italian, English or French. Publication of eligibility decisions on the University website constitutes official notification.
Industrial PhD Opportunities
Candidates employed in companies, research institutes, or public bodies may participate in “industrial PhD” programmes under a formal agreement. Selection for such roles includes company-proposed research topics and leads to a separate ranking list. Employment and research activities are coordinated through institutional agreements.
Application Process and Deadline
Applications must be submitted online via the University Student Portal no later than August 5, 2025, at 14:00 CET. Required documents (PDF, max 10 MB each) include degree certificates, curriculum vitae, and programme-specific forms. An application fee of €25 must be paid via credit card or PagoPA. Submissions via email or post are not accepted. Candidates with disabilities or learning disorders may request additional time: 50% or 30% respectively. No corrections are allowed post-submission, and late applications are automatically excluded.
Benefits, Examinations and Selection Procedure
PhD candidates are eligible for regional benefits (e.g. scholarships, housing) through DiSCo Lazio. Entrance examinations assess research aptitude through academic records, written tests, and oral interviews, including foreign language competence. Exam schedules and admission procedures will be posted on the University’s “Dottorati di Ricerca” page, which also serves as the official convocations channel. Foreign candidates may participate in oral evaluations via videoconference, provided technical details are appropriately arranged.
Selection Boards—appointed per programme—are responsible for evaluating applications and forming the ranking lists. Rankings are based on merit scores from both qualifications and examinations. In case of ties, younger candidates receive priority. Separate rankings govern funded, industrial and self-funded positions. Withdrawn candidates have their places reassigned in ranking order.
Enrollment, Scholarships and Tuition Exemptions
Ranked candidates will be notified via email and must complete enrollment electronically within the specified deadlines. Those awaiting degrees by October 31, 2025, must notify the PhD Office promptly upon degree completion, including identity documentation. Non-EU students enrolling must submit a residence permit or proof of application.
Annual scholarships amount to €16,243 gross, subject to social security contributions, with eligibility capped at individual annual income (excluding scholarship) of €14,000. The scholarship may increase by up to 50% during approved international research stays lasting between 3 and 12 months, extending to a total of 18 months under joint supervision agreements. A 10% research activity budget accompanies all scholarships. Funding overlaps with other scholarships are prohibited unless authorised by law; any undue payments must be repaid.
PhD students with scholarships are exempt from tuition and university contributions, while all doctoral candidates must pay minimal administrative fees (€16 stamp duty and €140 regional study tax), with exemptions available for certain categories.
